What's with the kayak craze?

Lately everyone is just talking about fishing from a yak. Are 19ft skeeters with a 150 not cool anymore?

You just can't compare a kayak to a boat. The only thing they have in common is they'll float your butt down a body of water. Completely different applications. I love kayak fishing but will buy a boat as soon as I can. I read somewhere that kayak fishing is the fastest growing outdoor sport right now, so stands to reason that growth would show itself on this board. I guess that's because it's pretty enjoyable. There's something awesome about being so close to the water, quiet mornings, hearing fish hit the surface...it's a lot of fun, but that doesn't take anything away from a boat. Sometimes I wish I had the ability to make it out fast to some different spots.

I could do sit-in kayaks, but those sit-on-tops look so damn dorky

If you want a kayak strictly for fishing, you are probably better off spending your money on a canoe. A canoe has more top room for gear and is more comfortable for all day on the water. A kayak is easier to paddle, though. Canoe with a trolling motor ftw

It's an affordable way for people to get on the water.
Why somebody with a real boat would get one I'm not quite sure, but I can definitely wrap my head around it for college kids.

I like to get away from the crowd, just tote and float....

I want one to mainly fish the numerous ponds I have access to... Lugging that bateau around gets olds

I have one if I did a bunch of pond fishing, but I just don't do much fishing period. I'd rated just ride to the monkey.

new kayak technology is making it more fun and easier to use them so people are into new things. not to mention the price difference between a big 12k boat and a 1k kayak. it also makes you feel like you have accomplished something by fishing in a kayak unlike fat asses throttling a boat around.
also you tend to fish more out of a kayak unlike a big boat you ride around more " looking for fish''

Quiet, portable, easily maneuvered...

Cheap way to go fishing. Also easier to go fishing by yourself. Dealing with a boat by yourself can be a pain in the arse if you have to pull it out the water everyday.

I fish many places out of a kayak that would otherwise be unfishable from a motor boat, either do to no boat launch or lake restrictions. There are several oxbows off the red river around Shreveport that hold really nice fish that you cannot put a boat in due to motor restrictions.

Kayaks get more people out on the water, for whatever reason. . . whats wrong with that
If I could justify a boat, then by all means I would indulge. A kayak requires minimum investment and is only limited to how far you want to paddle/peddle. I think they both have their place- kayaks can go places some boats cannot, whereas boats can make the long runs when the fish are out of reach. (like todays trip out of Beshels in Pointe a la Hache. . . never again)
The positive side to kayaking is that I do believe it makes you a better fisherman. Because you don't have the luxury of running to spot after spot until you find something, you are forced to do your homework before getting out on the water and then slow down and do what it takes to catch whatever is there. You may not bring home as many fish as the guy in the boat, but it makes it that much more enjoyable when you do end up tearing them up!

quote:it's made me one. you can't say "well the fish aren't hot here let's fly to the other side of the bay." You learn to really fish an area hard and IMO get better at catching fish.

ETA
Can launch anywhere.
Can keep it at my apartment. Without a kayak I would fish 1/10 the amount I do.
Cheap

Probably because not everyone can afford a 19' skeeter with a 150 on the back, but that is just a guess.

What's with the bowhunting craze?
Lately everyone is just talking about hunting with a bow. Are 7mm mags and .30-06's not cool anymore?
