Bringing NBA championships into this is absolutely ridiculous.

Carmelo had a great year and was great during the early part of his career but he had alot of years where he was basically just a chucker.

Well, I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. The other possibility isn't as kind.

"Michael Jordan is the GOAT. He won all those titles by himself."

Then, out the other side of the MSB's arse.

"Scottie Pippen is the greatest defender of all time. LeBron couldn't even make a FT with Pippen staring at him."

We get it. Your glory days are gone, and you live vicariously through a team that played over 20 years ago.

And? Melo never played on the same team with Jordan. Pippen did through most of his career and definitely during his prime.

If you were to select one player from all NBA history to D up someone like Melo, Pippen might be your first choice. On the other hand, Melo is an average defender at best.

The question in the OP is which is better in their prime, the answer is Pippen. Though Melo's prime will be longer and never be overshadowed by a teammate.

Pippen was All NBA 1st team 3 times, 2nd team 2 times and, 3rd team 2 times. Melo has never been 1st or 2nd team all NBA. Plus from 1991-2000 Pippen was either 1st or 2nd All NBA Defense. Carnelo not so much.

You should probably chill a bit. Even people who don't glorify the old days think Pippen outclasses Melo. And they'd be accurate.

And, this is the dumbest reasoning ever to make the case for one player over another.

"Pippen didn't have to do as much. He had MJ."

Um, Carmelo had to do with A LOT LESS than Pippen did, yet PIPPEN gets the benefit of the doubt for being better?

Pippen easily IMO.

Top 5 defenders in the history of the NBA and if he didn't play with Jordan, could have been a damn fine scoring threat as well.

ETA:

Its early for Melo though and he could easily surpass if he continues the way he's going.

Ok I will put it this way....... If I was starting a team and had a choice of the two. I would take pippen in a heartbeat over melo. And so would 95% of people on this board...........

No it isn't .

"Pippen didn't have to do as much. He had MJ."

That wasn't the argument. Lots of marginal players put up big numbers as the best option on a bad team. Your evidence of Carmelo being better boiled down to more points per game. That is simply ignoring the question and claiming "best in prime" equals "career scoring average."

Melo is a great scorer and has been the primary option on his team his entire career. That doesn't mean he is superior to everyone who has a lower scoring average than him.

quote:

Carmelo had to do with A LOT LESS than Pippen did,
And he has, as a result, accomplished a lot less. What is your point?

Pippen on defense was very similar to Lebron on defense when he tries. No one in the history of the game would "own" Pippen. Pippen might be the guy I'd pick to guard Melo in fact.

Melo is a pure scorer and is better than Pippen in ONLY that regard.

Pippen is a better passer, rebounder, and a MUCH MUCH better defender. And it wasn't like he couldn't score, he just didn't need to most of the time during his prime.

Oh, so NOW you are looking at team accomplishments.

The stats are the stats. Melo has scored more and rebounded for as many balls for his career (average per game).
