So they're finally making Gundam/Big O into a live action movie?

Really, if you look at the movies that he himself as directed, outside of Pan's Labyrinth, they really aren't anything special.
I know you mentioned Devil's Backbone Scruffy, but get outta here with that comment. I really don't get all the Del Toro bashing in this thread, you'd think he has been releasing crappy movies left and right based on this thread. I'm no fan boy, but Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, and Cronos are all superb films.
I mean, looking at movies Del Toro has directed you have:
excellent: Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Cronos
solid: Blade II, Hellboy
Mimic is pretty terrible, but that was made before all of the above films outside of Cronos.
Hellboy 2 was a bit of a hot mess, but I wouldn't consider one average to bad film in the past 15 years much of a reason to dog on a director, it's pretty silly to me.
This movie could flop horribly, but I'll be there to see how the Gundam/monster live action battle hybrid turns out.

That sounds much better than the Playboy Channel's ripoff -- "Carribean Rim Job"

It's like Gundam vs Godzilla

The monsters and giant human-controlled robots walking among city skyscrapers looks like an episode of Power Rangers.

Looks like a rip off of Transformers:Headmasters

This looks terrible, still gonna watch the shite out of it. I love crappy scifi.
Wonder why there has to be two pilots, got to be some terrible plot storyline there for that.

quote:Yes, these movies are excellent. I'm not disputing that.
excellent: Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Cronos
quote:Sure, but as I said, I don't put comic book movies on the same level as his other movies.
solid: Blade II, Hellboy
I would like to see more original content from him along the lines of PL, DB, and Cronos.
quote:Like I said in my earlier post, I'm a big Del Toro fan, but we build him up to be greater than he is, IMO.

Also, does Del Toro have some kinda sexual deal going on with Perlman because he is in pretty much every movie.

My best guesses: Redundancy in case one pilot is killed. Fragile controller inside of monstrous suit requires backup plan.
OR
The destructive potential of the giant robot is so great, it requires two people to sign off on an action, kind of like how you need two people to launch a nuclear missile.

Agreed, his original stuff is tremendously better than the comic stuff he's done.

OR how about one drives it while the other operates the weapon systems.

This
I'll probably watch it, enjoy the shite out of it, then come here, see the reactions, and be ashamed of myself

Scenario A: well written movie with good acting, giant monsters, and giant robots
Scenario B: poorly written and/or acted movie with giant monsters and giant robots
Win-win
(For similar win-win situations, see cowboys and aliens, battleship, among others)

Liked both of those, too
I've never been accused of having impeccable taste in movies.

Nor I. It's one of my best traits. I almost always leave the theater happy.
