last week... show up to do an installation for a customer in central.. crack of dawn..
old sign laying on ground in over grown pasture... flip over old sign.. THERE HE IS.. .longest rattlesnake I have seen in LA.... he raised up... classic rattle and pre - strike pose..... then he skedaddles into the brush... the real bizarre thing.. the coloration and pattern didn't seem right for a cane break.. and he was at well over 4 feet long....
then yesterday.. in another abandoned pasture this time in ascension parish... cutting some brush... along a fence row.... I hear what I think is my cell phone.. grab phone - nothing.. then I HEAR IT... about 5 feet away coiled up... there is a bout a 3 foot cane break...he slithered off into the nether regions before I could snap a pic or catch him...
be careful out there fellas...... both were in areas covered with black berries...

That is the most eerie sound you will hear in the woods.

Or a black panther or a squatch

I've encountered a lot of snakes through the years while picking blackberries. Just last week I found a kingsnake in the yard while picking dewberries with the kids.
Here's a story about a kingsnake. A few years ago I was headed up Hwy 61 somewhere below Natchez going to work. I had a brand new camera and was itching to take a picture with it. Well I caught a glimpse of a speckled kingsnake making his way across the road, into the grass. I stopped, ran over to where he was, trying to get a good up-close picture. About the time I got in position (directly in front of him) I noticed something moving by my foot. It was a 2' canebrake. The damn kingsnake was trailing him I assumed. Either that, or that was just a popular snake crossing spot. They both hauled arse right about that time, but I got a couple pictures with both in the frame. I'll try to find them and post later.

I have to agree. That gives you that real sinking feeling.

in context we were hunting on navy installation in VA and had "wandered" into a highly restricted area chasing a cripple..... we never did that again....
