I saw in the paper that the Women's Final Four had an economic impact of over $20 million for the city of New Orleans. They have got to be cooking the books for that. They can't even sell out.

The city just paid $375,000 for Top Chef 11. Does anyone think Padma, Tom, and Gail will spend that much money in town to make up for it? Certainly there's no other source of economic impact than one single factor.

Yep. The city was pretty packed that weekend. I was surprised.

If they brought 20,000 people into the city, each would only have to spend $1000. So the numbers are probably right.

I was visiting NOLA the weekend of the Final 4 for a wedding. Booked my hotel 3 months out (fortunately she had lined up a room block for guests), but I did a search via hotels.com and the only available hotels were at the Ritz and Roosevelt for $500/night. Economic impact isn't just limited to selling out a venue. On my flight down I ended up sitting next to a guy who's mom was on the UConn BOD. They were getting hooked up with fancy dinners, renting out whole bars, etc. and that's just one group of people from one school.

Also had an American Chemical Conference in town over the same dates

On April 7-11, 2013, over 15,000 chemists, academics, students, and other professionals met in New Orleans, LA, to address one of the most important issues of our time: The relationship between chemistry and food in our society. It was a great success, and we would like to thank all of you: Staff, exhibitors, presenters, attendees and participants for making this possible.
