Roland Emmerich has been talking about his proposed Independence Day sequel, explaining that he would like to create a series of films for the franchise.

Speaking at the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival, and reported by /Film – Emmerich revealed that he and co-writer Dean Devlin were creating a large mythology for the tentatively titled ID Forever - Parts One and Two.

“That’s what we talked about a lot,” he explained. “The mythology of why did the aliens come in the first place, what is the bigger story of this whole thing. And we talked a lot about swarm intelligence. And [the humans] are individual intelligence. Even though we kill each other and have wars against each other, we have something special. We have this domino human spirit to believe in good and overcoming enemies.

“It’s a little bit about that, and when you get a bigger mythology going, I think you have the chance to do not only one or to or three, but you can create a series, and that’s what we want to do.”

Emmerich also confirmed that there would be a place for star Jeff Goldblum in their proposed sequels.

Always thought a sequel would be interesting but not sure if the time for that opportunity has passed.

He needs to concentrate on doing his brother a solid and make a big screen version of The Americans.

He's really trying to take the only thing he's ever done that is some source of pride and turn it into shite. Man I knew this dude sucked but c'mon.

This wouldn't ruin the original movie (which is awesomely awesome and fun as shite).

I'd watch (with low expectations).

I like the idea of using an established universe that can be built on. However it seems a bit weird to do this now.

It could be interesting to see a 20 years later Earth where each country has had to not only rebuild, but prepare for the next attack.

Sounds a lot like Ender's Game.

I agree, but you could have Goldblum and even Pullman make small cameos.

Heck Pullman could be say chancellor of the new world order.

Will Smith, to me, would not make a ton of sense to be in this movie. However, I'm sure he would be written in as some NASA /Air force general in charge of silence defense.

cracked.com always said that after ID4 the world would be destroyed anyway b/c the aliens that showed up were just a small number of them. they would just send more.

I've read that on there but always thought that argument sucked. Wasn't it established that they were "locusts" and the entire civilization just moved from planet to planet until they used up all the resources and then moved on? Space carneys. Sparneys? So didn't Will Smif and Goldblum nuke the mother ship killing all those not on earf or am I missing something?

Do it. So many terrible movies out there, this would be one I would like to see, actually.

Independence Day was a really good movie. Loved the banter between characters. Bring them all back, reprise their roles, and do it all again. It makes sense.

I have to say that Roland Emmerich is probably one of the worst filmmakers of all time and anyone could write one of his films. All he does is destroy shite and make America look awesome. People say this with Michael Bay, but at least I can see at least some effort he puts into it (aside from Transformers 2). Emmerich makes Michael Bay look like Steven Spielberg. It's really as if you gave a 7 year old hundreds of millions of dollars and then tell him to make his own movie. At least Bay seems like he's closer to the teenage range with his writing.

He has pretty much made his entire film career doing this. Every single character and plot point is the same in these, only its worse and even dumber than ID4.

Long ago, I read that the ID sequel would've been based on one of the ships sending out a distress signal. I guess you could have a movie where the mother ship that blew up was just the scout ship sent to invade Earth while their entire civilization could've been following behind.

I feel like a sequel at this point would end up being nothing more than a wannabe District 9 with a dash of Starship Troopers
