I'm probably going to be getting a flats boat within the next week so that I can get in some really shallow water. I normally fish with a trolling motor in those cconditions, but I'll be able to pole out of this boat. I've never done it before. Is it beneficial in Louisiana?

Got back from doing just that on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon today. Was a hell of a time. Not sure how well it translates to Louisiana fishing though.

That's really the only environments that I'm familiar with it. I think our muddy waters tend to make fish not quite as spookish so people don't really resort to it. Don't know if a poling platform will be of any real benefit.

Very, trolling motors spoke the hell out of reds, not to mention stir up the water. I keep a rope tied around the pole and shove it in when we get on good school.

This.

Nothing better than polling and pointing out fish for people to cast at. It's like the greatest assist ever, but if you're not used to it, it gets tiring.

When i fish with friends we switch up after a couple of fish, but you have a lot of opportunities from platform.

What kind of flats boat did you end up going with over the surface drive?

Every time I go... The fish in the Lagoon are pretty spooky and once that trolling motor is on they are gone...

I found a good deal on a banshee extreme with the motor still under warranty. I know a guy that sells gator tails and talked with him. To set it up to make it how I wanted was going to be 20k+. Made the decision easier.

I pole and do not have a trolling motor. Don't catch much fish either way so I may not be the best person to ask.

After seeing how many reds were still around when we crept up on them in a loud arse airboat, I don't think they get as spooked as people think.

I've definitely had reds spook from a trolling motor plenty of times. Sometimes they spook sometimes they don't, but push polling greatly reduces the chances of spooking fish IMO.

I can agree with that.

I think we are about to see more and more flats skiffs used in the Louisiana marshes. There are a few manufacturers of these skiffs (Chittum, Hells Bay, Maverick and Ranger) that make skiffs that can handle pretty big water and have the HP to deal with it as well.

That said, I am not too sure I would want to leave Venice and cross the river on a foggy morning in a flats skiff.

I have a friend that guides out of a hells bay and I was very surprised at how well it handles chop.

I have a friend that demo'ed a Hells Bay Biscayne (their newest model), which is only 16' long. He said it is a beast in big seas...more so than many much larger bay boats.

I struck a verbal deal with the seller for this boat. Now I don't know how this works. I'm paying cash, but the seller has to pay off his loan. His bank is saying the title won't be released until my check clears, which can take 6-10 days. Is that normal. Can I take and use the boat without the title? I don't feel like its a very good deal for me since I'm paying money on my end up front, but I don't own the boat for possibly a week and a half. And I really don't feel like walking around with that much cash, if bringing actual cash would speed it up.

I want to get this settled because I'd like to fish this boat for the oilman's.
