I was trying to think of other players who were valuable 6th men then traded to another team to be a starter. I cant think of anyone off the top of my head who actually panned out like Harden did.

Who you got?

Walton went from superstar to sixth man. he didn't do much after winning the award, and I don't think he played for any team after the Celtics.

McGrady from Toronto to Orlando maybe? Joe Johnson bounced from Boston to Phoenix, but he doesn't quite fit either.

You don't usually see a team with enough depth to keep a player like Harden on the bench, even early in their careers.

Looking at that award, pretty clearly this has NEVER happened before, at least not since early 80s. Probably never.

Not a superstar but as a Magic fan, there are a long list of players that we shipped off that turned out to be decent.

I still haven't gotten over Corey Maggette. We traded him after his rookie year.

Injuries destroyed him. It's amazing to me he won 6th man in 86.

edit: in fact 86 was the only season he stayed healthy all year.

I agree Manu could have been another team's 1st option scorer...

Not sure but he never played for another team. He was drafted by the Hornets but there was already a deal in place to ship him to LA.

eta: You're right, he was 6th man behind Eddie Jones and Van Exel. Looks like he started in this 3rd season. Also - won Slam Dunk contest as a rookie (I didnt remember him having done that..)
