High quality action star a la mid-career Bruce Willis. I think he could have pulled off some decent acting every now again much like Willis (Unbreakable).

The real question is: What kind of career would River Phoenix have had?

I had actually followed Brandon's career before The Crow. It was clear he had something special. And he actually had acting chops. I actually think he would've become a serious star for a long time post-Crow.

To be honest, I'm not sure his career would be much different than what it already is. I think the Crow was his absolute peak, even if he had stayed alive. Best case is that he gets a few sequels from that...... But it's a possibility that movie may have bombed had he not died. I don't think anyone would argue that he was much more than a very mediocre actor. Doomed to B movies.

not sure if serious. I mean I liked the guy and was a pretty big fan of a few of his movies in the early 90's like Rapid Fire and Showdown in Little Tokyo (Tia Carrere naked son ) But the dude was a pretty shitty actor. Kind of Paul Walker-ish.

The dude could not act. He may have pulled off the action hero thing for a while but probably would have taken a similar path as van damme. Saying he could act because he acted well as the crow is akin to saying Keanu Reeves is a good actor based off the matrix. The crow was a very simple role and the easiest type of role to act.

Keanu Reeves gets too much hate, man. He's not as bad as people make him out to be.

The Crow probably wouldn't have been as big as it was had he not died during it. I still think it would have been a hit that would have lead to a few more wide releases for Lee. I doubt he would have gone much past that. He wasn't a good actor; don't think his career would've been that great, although headlining a few wide release movies is not a bad career.

He could have probably had whatever type of career he wanted. He was great in a wide range of roles. I think his career could have gone in a wide range of directions, all positive. He would only be 43 now.

Pretty much. He was a heart throb and Bruce Lee's son. Once those novelties wore off (which they more than likely would have by like 96 or 97) he'd be what Steven Seagal, JCVD etc were. The whole martial arts/action movies were dying a fast death about that time the Crow came out. And he didn't have enough acting chops to go far beyond that genre.

IMO, River Phoenix just opened a door for Leonardo DiCaprio. I'd imagine him doing just about every movie Leo did, or movies very similar. Or he'd be like a Johnny Depp. He'd more than likely do whatever roles he wanted to do (those somewhat outlandish/artistic types), and probably would have been pretty successful at it.

ETA: I just had this conversation a few months ago with a friend and they thought he'd be very comparable to Christian Slater. I don't think he would have fell off as hard or as fast as Slater did though. I think he had way more dimensions. JMHO.

I think they both would have gone the Val Kilmer route. Some new guy would come here and post a picture from the last five years and ask, "What happened to him?"

Yeah, the Val Kilmer road was also a possibility for River Phoenix. I just didn't want to bring that one up, but one thing different about Phoenix that Depp and DiCaprio didn't have (since I used those 2 in an earlier comparison) going for them, was a huge drug problem. Even if River Phoenix would have survived, he might have flamed out within a decade because people might have been tired of working with him and shite. So although I think his talent was on the same level as DiCaprio and Johnny Depp, I'm not sure he had the same discipline.

Rumor was Lucas loved him in Indiana Jones and had him in mind for Anakin.

Well, I did use both sides of the coin. My original prediction was that he would have been similar to Johnny Depp or Leo......but I just said it was possible he could have been a huge frick up too. I could totally see both situations happening. lol

He most probably would've been in the same league as a JCVD. Best case scenario, he would've been Keanu Reeves. Today, he could be anywhere from The Chairman on Iron Chef America to an Expandables movie.
