I am a gas man. Webber makes a damn fine grill, and you can get started with one of the "spirit" class grills for around $400 I think.
I'm not a fan of buying the cheapest shite out there, even if it comes with a bunch of bells and whistles.

Charcoal man here......
U can get a decent barrell grill at Lowes for $125.... $160 or so with the smoke box: Chargriller
If ur not a novice and have the $ to blow, get a Big Green Egg.
As Meridian said tho, there are some pretty decent charcoal/gas combo grills for $300 or so.
Of course, if you dont entertain folks or have no close family, cant beat a large round weber.
