Both of these bands are legendary, influential bands that are both awesome in their own right. My question today for y'all is, if you had to pick either the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd as the definitive Southern Rock band, which one would you pick?

My choice is Lynyrd Skynyrd, as they have been one of my favorite bands for years, and while the Allman Bros. came before Skynyrd, I really feel like Skynyrd took the Southern Rock sound to a whole new level and the three-guitar attack set them apart from other bands. No disrespect to the Allman Bros., they are legends and have influenced countless bands, but I gotta go with Skynyrd on this one

I prefer Skynard. Though that does not mean I don't like ABB.

ABB hands down for me, their catalog of classics is just so much bigger I think

Allman all day, every day.

Songs like "that smell" really hurt Skynyrd for me. I think that song is terrible. Terrible.

Allman Brothers because musically, they own it. They are much more versatile than Skynyrd and cover a broader range of music. When RVZ died, Skynyrd never really recovered. When Duane died, the Brothers were able to continue at a very high level and turned out a prolific amount of great music. The AB are just a better band.

Skynyrd is definitely a great band and I wish that RVZ would have been around longer to write some more great stuff.

Love both, both were inspirations for me to learn guitar. That being said, I'll take Skynyrd over ABB by the slightest of margins.

Lynyrd skynyrd isn't fit to bring coffee to the roadie who carried Duane's guitar case

I couldn't pick between ABB, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, and CCR if I tried

eta: I believe ABB was easily the most talented

You make some good points Loubacca, especially about RVZ. The man was one of a kind, in every musical facet, he stood out and helped turn Skynyrd into a legendary band. One of the things about Ronnie that is most impressive is that he never wrote his song lyrics down. He would come up with the lyrics in his head, and that was it, he never had to write the lyrics down, which is a testament to his unique ability as a song-writer.

I too wish that RVZ would have had more time to continue his musical legacy. The Skynyrd plane crash derailed such a promising and unique band, and while Skynyrd has tried to rebound over the years, they haven't been able to recapture the magic the original band had, mainly because Ronnie Van Zant was the catalyst for Skynyrd's success in the 70's. Not taking anything away from the other members, in a band, everyone plays their part and helps the band get to where it needs to go, but in certain bands, one member is the driving force, and that was Ronnie Van Zant.

I understand what you guys are saying about ABB, and trust me, they are legends. Duane Allman, like Ronnie Van Zant, was a musical genius who died way too young, but his legacy continues.

Honestly I don't think it is close, look at the people who played with ABB at some point and have also had phenomenal careers with other bands. I think ABB's influence has rippled out a lot more.

That song does fit the end of that movie well. I love that piano solo.
