I could go on about how some sides have won a CL and yet, aren´t recognized for such, only in the record books, but I´ve got a feeling, you won´t comprehend.

i fear Chelsea will be one of these teams...

If counter-attacking can get your team the win then do it. It sure as hell worked better than Barcelona's exemplary playing style.

Barca wouldn't have won anything over the past few years if they were just a counter-attacking side. Kind of like Madrid haven't won anything.

I think what he's saying is that Barca went out faithful to the idea of how Barca wants to play.

I have to agree. Losing 7-0 sucks, but it's better for Barca than if they had kept it close by playing like Chelsea played in last year's CL. I know Chelsea won the CL and that's great. I'm not hating on the way they played, it's just not for Barca.

Well they just beat Barca in the league last year.

Congrats I guess? Will that comfort when they like in bed at night feel BM's dong sliding in and out for the next several months?

Dude, barca are the very last team in the world with any right to act high and mighty about the way a game was won. Many of their biggest victories have been on the back of absolute disgraces.

You're projecting. You might feel that way after such a loss, but I bet they don't. It's a clear indication they need to make some adjustments, that's all. You can't argue with the success they have had, and this certainly doesn't diminish it.

Whether the way Barca plays is the "right" way to play is up for debate. What's not debatable is whether they have a definite way of playing and have stuck to it to their great reward.

Pretty sure he understands football. Maybe he just doesn't understand fans who don't mind their team's players flopping like bitches but get upset about their team playing to their strengths.

NOBODY in Europe wants to see an elephant dig his head in the sand for 180+ minutes, with his arse covering the goal, and when he sees fit, run the ball the other way, throwing it off to some previously slumbering tinkerbells, do they?

Makes no sense for the viewer, let alone the lover of the sport, does it?

winning should be the primary goal, though

most sports evolve into a defensive-based gameplan around risk-averse scoring. soccer hasn't...yet

The basic rules of the sport, yes. Club history, style of play, etcétera, I don´t think so.

Your puerile dig couldn´t be any further from the truth.

quote:

their team playing to their strengths.

Again, you don´t understand football. The OP is about a club´s history and playing style.

Playing to their strengths as you say, is a club deviating substantially from it´s M.O. and-or sporting DNA(see Mourinho, Jóse, Real Madrid).

re: More Madrid Backlash (sorry, quote wouldn´t let me enter it)

i just reject an aesthetically-based view of judging success. it's an illogical and irrational view

results are what matters

if you want to criticize jose for how Real did in la liga this year? that's fine. i think they should have beaten BvB as well. criticize him for failing at those things is perfectly logical

but to claim barca, who was butt fricked, did better than real, who was a goal away from moving on, it just irrational

this has little to do with me being american. it's just logic/rationality

It´s not just aesthetics.

Have you a reading comprehension problem? Nobody said they did better, simply, it was admirable that they stuck to their guns.

i do get it, but i think it's illogical and irrational

at the least it's emotional thinking, which is a subgrouping of irrationality

quote:

it was admirable that they stuck to their guns.

why? they did worse. a lot worse

being stubborn to your detriment is not admirable. some people actually define insanity that way

Yes, but it's the quintessential, "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.

And, let's face it. They've probably truly sat back and looked to hit a team on the counter <15-20 times over Mourinho's tenure.

yeah the bunker-counter is mainly a barca tactic, and it has had some success

barca is just better than real at this moment. real had to adjust to barca to try to give themselves an advantage

yes, the project was doomed from the outset. He only had a 40% approval rating when hired, therefore, his only hope was to win a CL, and even then, still not enjoy unanimous acceptance.

Football is a way of life in Europe. Rationality and logic are rarely the dominant components of the equation.

Many can´t seem to wrap their heads around this.
