The best thing about Anchorage is it's only 30 minutes from Alaska. If you spend a week there and never leave the city, you've wasted the opportunity of a lifetime. At least drive down the Kenai to Seward or Homer. Stop at a roadhouse and get a burger, rub elbows with some real characters. You don't go to Alaska for fine dining, although if you look hard enough, you might find some.

But I know what you mean.

When I went we stayed in Homer for the majority of the trip, there were some really nice places there, and some fun bars.

When I went, we stayed in the coolest hotel I'd ever been in- Captain Cook. They had an excellent seafood restaurant within (this wasn't too long ago).
