Houston sports talk radio has said a lot about Sam since he was drafted. Today I hear they interviewed les last night about him and are talking about Sam moving to outside linebacker. Sorry I had to get out of the truck and didn't catch the interview or the rest of the conversation.

I like him being a Texan but not sure about him being a LB. What does the rant think?

He'll be on the weak side, so not having to drop into coverage very often.

But teams will certainly motion him into coverage every chance they get b/c he does NOT have the ability to cover in space at this level.

Wade LOVES him...and he seems to know what he's doing.

He'd be a big backer, but I think they stole him in the late third.

I have questions about his coverage ability too, but he's going to play strongside for the Texans.

You sure? You may be right, but I know there is universal concern about his coverage ability. Why would they even put him over there?

I guess lack of options. Reed, Merciless, and the other rookie OLB aren't know for coverage skills either.

Plus, they play more dime than anyone in the league, so those TE's will have a safety on them most of the time. Sam shouldn't have to cover much, even on the strong side.

Just be worried when yall play lower tier teams as he plays down to competition :rimshot:

But I think he's athletic enough to at least give it a shot. Could end up being good for him

I just can't see him covering anybody, back pedaling etc.

But yes, he was a steal in the third.

The Texans plan to start Montgomery out as a strongside linebacker, so their first four picks have addressed three areas of concern.

quote:

“He’s big, strong, powerful, explosive individual,” Herring said. “The one thing that he will have to learn is that he will have to learn to drop a little bit and things that he hasn’t done as a defensive end at LSU -- understanding that they don’t cultivate OLBs in college, so we have to pull from the defensive end position.

“Basically, you have to give and take with their ability to drop out in space, something they haven’t done. That remains to be seen. That’s something we’ll have to work on. As far as playing the run and having pass rush skills and having the play strength that’s above average in college, he has a foundation to be a good outside backer for us.”

I guess the plans could change.

But yeah, if I were an OC facing the Texans' D, I would go after Montgomery in the passing game.

Sam can start in time at weakside DE opposite Watts, but he is not a LB. They can try it and they will find out he won't be good in pass coverage. But I think he will really surprise them with how ferocious he is when they start camp.

I don't see it. Not sure Big Sam has the speed to cover the sideline. He should be playing with his hand down because he is a disruptive force in the run game. Just my two cents since you asked.

I think its a great fit because he wont be asked to cover TE or WR a lot and just will rush passer. He can become the next Terrell Suggs if he wants too, he has the talent its just wether he wants it. I compare them because they have similar size 6'3' 260 and run 4.8s in 40yd dash.

Les basically said last night that if you give Sam clear direction and guidelines he will play hard. if you don't then some of his "self professed philosphy can creep in"...but Les said he will be an outstanding player

Sam could easily bulk up to 285, at 6'4ish, he would not get crushed.

Two LSU coaches remarked at the Senior Bowl that they do not believe Texans third-round pick Sam Montgomery is a fit at outside linebacker in a 3-4. The coaches said he's "definitely not a fit" because they don't think Montgomery is athletic enough to play in space. Reliable Texans writer Lance Zierlein believes fourth-round pick Trevardo Williams has a better chance to play early than third-rounder Montgomery. Montgomery was a value pick at No. 95 overall, but he's not an explosive edge rusher and may be a schematic misfit. Apr 29 - 4:38 PM
