We'd still take the same "hit" because you can carry over unused cap.

The only reason to release him this year is to sign someone. So the question becomes can you sign someone of equal value from what you gain in cap space? I'm not sure you can.

Now if it's a combo cut, like cutting Strief and Harper for a better RT, then yes it may make sense.
