Why is it that so many teams have compensatory picks?

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced on Monday will supplement the 222 choices in the seven rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft (April 25 to 27), which will kick off in prime time for the fourth consecutive year.

It's done by a formula, not arbitrary. I don't know the formula.

seems stupid, why should teams be rewarded for letting talent go? sign the guy if you want him, if not, your reward is the money you saved

we don't get any because we're evil. Aren't you watching the draft? Don't you notice the big red "Saints lose 2nd pick due to BOUNTY" caption that kept coming up every time we picked?

It probably will be there next season too

The quick answer is because we signed too many FAs over what we lost. You only get picks if you lose more FAs(they actually have to sign with someone for it to count as a loss) than you sign.

Not sure the final count from this offseason, but I'm sure we signed more than we lost. That means no comp picks next year either.

I forgot about the quality aspect, but it still comes down to snap count. If he plays every snap(and let' say guys like Daniel and Casillas barely play at all), menawhile Lewis and Butler play every(or almost every) snap, we get nothing.

Too many people are forgetting we picked up a starting CB. He will effectively cancel out Bushrod by himself.
