Okay, Is it Possible to Agree on This . . .

Okay, a lot of posters went ballistic with the Vaccaro pick because they had been salivating over the prospect of Jarvis Jones. I didn't have particularly strong feelings either way, although I have serious doubts about Jones long term, and I do think Vaccaro, while not a spectacular prospect, appears to be solid. And I know SFP's argument about "value position", etc.
How about this. The coaching staff and personnel peeps seem to believe that Galette, Butler, Wilson, et al, will thrive and (along with blitz packages) bring needed pressure in a 3-4. And with that belief, they decided a solid pick to strengthen the safety position was the better choice at 15.
Now, reasonable minds, I suppose, can disagree. But can we dispense with the idea that people are stupid for disagreeing? And, definitely, when someone's fricking job is on the line, like coaches, GM, scouts, etc, that they perhaps have a little more invested in the issue than we do?
TIA.

I also think Harper would return to a more blitzing role bc of this. He was good at that role!

I think you could slide Harper into an OLB role at times also. I'm sure he could get on the Charles Grand diet and move positions.

I'm much more mello now that we got the NT Jenkins.

If Harper had any ball skills, I'd put him in the role of a Palamalu or TM7..........just roam the field and cause havoc.
Posted on 4/27/13 at 9:53 am to VOR
That's exactly how I saw that pick.

he's done that for years. unfortunately the havoc was wreaked on our defense, not the opposing offense

I just don't see a role for him as a pass defender. He's no good at it. Probably too small to play LB. What else is he going to do?

The elephant in the room is that the Saints KNEW they needed to get better at rushing the QB.
The Saints KNEW JJ was there for the picking.
The Saints BELIEVE he was not a value at 15.
If anymore of you want to mention that pitt got him at 16 and this proves the Saints wrong I will be glad to show you their drafts at LB I posted yesterday of the last 10 years again. For gods sake the first FA they went after was Kruger. When that failed they looked at the players they had ranked next in value and performance which just happen to a bunch of guys in the secondary.

Plus spinal stenosis is nothing to mess around with. It could be something the Saints didnt want to worry about. Make the sure safe pick that still upgrades the S position which was needed with how bad our S are against the pass.

If Jones becomes a star and Vacarro is average, it isn't because their front office is smarter.
It's because they have Dick Lebeau.

I don't know why people get so upset...
There is no such thing as a "sure" draft pick...
I mean Robert Gallery, Aaron Curry, among others were supposed to be NFL ready "sure" picks.
Jones is a flashier pick because he has been a premier SEC player for a couple years now while many had never heard of Vaccaro before the draft.
I do believe in building a team from inside out and not outside in, but front office believes that the players there when they picked didn't fit exactly what they wanted. So they went with a player they liked for theick.
If they missed, then they miss, it wouldn't be the first time the Saints had missed on a first round player.

yeah, I'd think so. They have been pretty solid on defense over the years no matter who they had out there.
Woodley and Harrison were both hurt the last few years and a lot of people kept mentioning how old their defense was. But look at where they finished in total defense last year... 1st.

The best part about it is that the Steelers fans on their forum are split about Jones just like we are. A lot of them think he'll be a bad fit, and I swear a few of them said they were hoping Vacarro would drop.

quote:I can see this- you don't just excercise/rehab spinal stenosis away. A lot of times it continues to degrade and worsen, and requires surgery just to keep you able to walk and pee on your own, depending on what portion of the spine. And something universal about it is the strong medical advice to limit the amount of stress you put on your spine, if you want to lead a normal life after 40. In other words, playing linebacker in the NFL isn't something any neurosurgeon would endorse. Wouldn't doubt this being a reason why he slacks so much in practice; he's limiting the stress his spine undergoes.

It truly sucks for Jones, he looks to be a rare talent along the lines of a Lawrence Taylor. But the guy might seriously have to retire after his 1st contract.
Hell, that might be his plan all along- get one good contract and make some dough, and get out while he can still walk.

What do you take....
3 years of a player like how Shawne Merriman played early for SD... or a player that plays 7 years similar to Harper?
