OG Snappa thread

A pure country thread regarding how to catch, clean, cook and enjoy the snappers.

Nevertheless, I appreciate that Geaux started this new one.

I don't normally fish for them, usually just run across them. What do y'all use for bait. Think I may set a few lines out.

We always set trot lines in the small bayous and load up on choupique. Use ditch crawfish for the choupique and then filet the choupique (leaving scales and skin on). The hide on the choupique stays on a LOT longer than any other fish. Also, any panfish (perch, bream etc.) works well, but you'll lose a lot of bait to other fish and such.

how do you keep all the other turtle types off of em.

I saw a snapping turtle by the house, but the thing is filled with softshells and others.

You don't.

Kill the sliders keep the snappers and softshells.

I like the taste of a softshell better than a snapper.

They're also easier to clean than a snapper.

Softshell I caught, cleaned and ate last season:

There is a very large soft shell in the pond at work I have my eye on!

In the OG thread I linked above, you'll find TreeDawgs sauce piquant recipe.

It's worthy.

No worries.

When you're bored, I recommend you read the entire OG thread.

It's pretty informative and entertaining.

Bookmarked. Do ya'll find they taste better if you clean 'em for a week or so and feed them "clean" food?

I honestly don't know that answer.
Ive always kept them alive a week or two in clean water.

I've never caught one and immediately cleaned it.
