“Opportunity comes into play,” Loomis said during his pre-draft news conference earlier this week. “If you’re not getting calls to move back – there has been a couple of occasions where there have been a number of players where we thought hey we can move back and still get one of our guys but we didn’t have the opportunity.
“Either we didn’t get a call or the calls we made weren’t responded to favorably. We’re more than willing to move back if the opportunity presents itself.”

“Obviously there's a point where I'd think we'd be willing to move back, but there's a point where we don't want to move too far,” he said. “And the same thing with moving forward. So there's probably a group of 10-12 teams on either side of this that I'll touch base with."

“It gives you some flexibility and yet you know you're going to get the opportunity to select a good player if you just sit tight, somebody that we have confidence that can come in immediately as well as be a good player for a long term for us,” Loomis said.

Would love for us to trade down. Hope it happens, we need the picks.

So we can trade back... trade up... or stay put?

After reading this board for so long, I thought we had to trade back. Thanks Loomis!

Biggest problem with trading down is to get someone to trade up, as simple as that may seem.

I still say that New Orleans is in a great spot because of the Rams sitting right behind them. If Austin or Vaccaro falls there then it shouldn't be that hard to find a suitor.

I would like to see us trade back with the 49ers. There are a lot of good value picks at the end of the 1st and early in 2nd round this year. John Jenkins, Margus Hunt, and Tank Carradine should be good pickups in that range.

Hopefully we can threaten the rams with a few potential trade suitors into just dropping one spot and grabbing a pick in the process. We get our guy and a pick and they get theirs. Pipe dream...

which means we move back and get good players, not just one player.

Boo this man!

Moving up is nothing but trouble unless you're desperate for that brand new QB or something. I would much rather have last year's 1st and the year before's second than ANY running back let alone Ingram.

So the range we're looking at is not moving up higher than 3rd-5th to not falling past 25th-27th.

I have to imagine the move up idea is just for a top LT as the defensive talent up to 15 seems to be about equal so it wouldn't make too much sense to move up for defense(unless they have someone rated so much higher).

Barring that or staying put, I'd have to think moving back would be to snag a WR, CB, Safety, or 2nd tier LT as the value is better for those in the 20s than at 15.

But like Loomis said, sometimes you can't move back so I think they could still "reach" for one of those positions at 15.

I know this:

Sounds like what you're saying, but I don't think that's what he meant. I think he meant there are 10-12 teams TOTAL, some on one side, some on the other, that he will talk to.

Meaning it could be 2-3 teams to move up and 7-10 teams to move down. Or 6 on each side (although given our dearth of picks, I think its more likely there are many more teams he would call to move back).

Possible I could be misunderstanding but it could go either way.

And I think people are overlooking the fact that would could go all Ingram trade if we liked someone enough. It doesn't have to be this year's picks and the posters here don't have to like it.

Why not? He's new to the game of football but has a ton of potential. His athleticism and ceiling should be worth a strong look early in the second round if we were able to trade picks with the 49ers.

I think the answer is obvious there.

There have been plenty of polished guys who fizzled out early or got stuck in mediocrity for their entire careers but got drafted high because of being safe picks. Aaron Curry is a very recent example and Sedrick Ellis is another one that is closer to home. Sometimes its worth taking a chance on a high potential prospect especially one that is available in the second round.
