Because they're murderers of innocent fish.

1. Dr. Stein's research to help get the offshore platforms be considered essential marine habitat in an attempt to slow the removal of the structures
2. for rodeos, its a category. Like mentioned, it is not easy at all to land a tarpon underwater.. you just think they can fight on rod and reel. (at these rodeos there are usually some Caribbean islanders there that will take all the tarpon, cuda, and jacks off your hands)
3. and like he said, of course its fun. It is a huge challenge that could end very badly if you arent prepared and composed

thanks for the educated answer. My question to you was not an attempt at a flame. I was just curious as to why a non edible species was being targeted for spearing which I'm sure always leads to death whereas hook and line does not always.

You could actually release one and have it survive if the shot isnt in a fatal location (head/gills)
They dont bleed a lot when you hit them with the spear if it isnt in the vitals. And the shaft itself doesnt cause a lot of damage (nothing like a gun shot)
When we have various fish pull off the shaft, they will swim away like nothing has happened (usually, sometimes you know its fatal but nothing you can do but feed the sharks)

Killing a tarpon for any reason is just plain wrong....
I would venture to say I have probably caught more tarpon than 99.99999% of you on this board.. in fact I have probably caught more in Orleans parish than any of you have caught..... I have yet to kill one.
just because it's legal doesn't make it right....

impossible to know for a fact kemosabe...
But I broke off an awfully big one in Navarre once... because sharks were starting to appear...
with that being said - If I caught a record or top ten fish - depending on the situation I would likely keep it.
I had one on a fly rod in la once - but we couldn't actually get it in the boat - I was gonna keep that one..
and I agree there are lot more tarpon than people realize...
especially after the demise of gill nets... in fact - once the gill nets left - tarpon started appearing in Lake P and Borgne again(they were still there during the hey day but not like when I was a tyke... I can remember seeing 30-40 roll at a time within site of ponchartrain beach when I was about 8 or 9..

All I'm saying is that the mortality rate of catch and release tarpon times the numbers caught, the handful we kill annually is minuscule in the overall tarpon population
I can guarantee you that if the numbers took an obvious dive that no one would go out and shoot a tarpon.

But who knew? -- except the divers themselves, that is. This relative handful of people were the olny ones who saw what was going on down there. They saw jewfish disappearing, so the stopped shooting them. Yes, amazingly, well before the State or the Feds moved to protect jewfish, the Louisiana Council of Underwater Dive Clubs had removed them from all competitive diving. Now, they're back

? first I have heard of that...
heard years ago(like 85 or so) of a gill net having about 30 that were about 5-10lbs each in lake eugenie..
spawn off shore.. currents may carry young inshore..
but a lot of folks think they come in shore to spawn - they do not.

I dont have the pictures but Dr. Stein has caught a lot of baby tarpon in inland louisiana waters
IDK if they lay eggs offshore or actually do come in to lay them. I would not be surprised to hear they come in. I've seen tarpon in the marshes north of Terrebonne bay before
