i purchased a 20hp 4-stroke yamaha outboard motor the other day. it is a 2007 model and it has a hose attached to it that you can hook up to the garden hose to flush out salt water. my question is:
if i connect the hose to this attached hose, do i need to put earmuffs on the lower unit and run water there as well?

I believe that flush should be used without the engine running. The larger outboard manuals say not to run the engines when flushing this way.

No earmuffs and no running the motor. The reason for running the motor with muffs is because the muffs provide water to the inlet. The motor is run for the pump to drive the flow.
The hose connect actually forces water through the entire system using domestic water pressure.

Yes. That is only to flush out the motor. It will not supply enough water to lub the waterpump.
If the motor has been used in saltwater, run it on the muffs. Run it long enough to bring the motor up to normal temp, 10 mins. This will displace the salt that plates out inside the motor. DO NOT rev the motor way up, That does harm due to no back pressure on the motor not being in the water.

If you use the ear muffs you do not need to use the flush hose. I'm not 100% on that exact motor you have but the larger Yamaha's most just use the flush hose alone, just don't rev the motor. The reason the manual says no, is because they don't want people to rev the motor, this is not good at all for it just to flush out a motor.

I know you're talking about the earmuffs for water circulation, but this comment is from someone whose hearing is going to pot.
Dem outboards are loud when you flush 'em out of the water.
Go ahead and look like a little fig and put some earmuffs on your damn head as well (or other hearing protection). frick that "it don't bother me" macho shite.
