Was this guy any good in real life?

I know in Tecmo Super Bowl he was a pretty good player, especially at kick and punt returner.

He actually worked at my old CPA firm in our Metairie office a few years back. Since moved back to Atlanta. Super nice and cool guy.

Not much of a position player, but a damn good return man, if memory serves correct.

Ironhead was very under-rated!

This guy was the most injury prone player on Tecmo Super Bowl.

He ALWAYS had to be carried off the field.

It was a glitch in the game program. You could return almost every KO with him if you got good zigzag skills

Saints at that time weren't built for his running style. They needed a bruiser-back for most of their running plays.

If the offensive, feature back mindset was there, he could have been used a lot like Marshall Faulk. Again, the league just wasn't there yet.

He was pretty good. Kind of a fill in. Chris Berman use to say his name in an Irish accent on the highlights

Gil "The Thrill" Fenerty. I remember him as a good running back when he could hold on to the ball. I used to call him Fumblin' Fenerty. I think he was the leading rushing in division II IIRC.

I guess in the late 80's and early 90's he was 3rd on the depth chart behind Hilliard and Mayes at RB?

The Saints drafted Fenerty in the 7th round of the '86 draft, after taking Hilliard in 2, Mayes in 3 and Barry Word in 4.

Fenerty didnt hire an agent and used his girlfriend as his partner in negotiations with Jim Finks. Apparently, Fenerty et al and Finks had vastly differing opinions as to Gill's market value. So the Saints went into the season w/ Hilliard, Mayes and Word on the roster and Fenerty went to Canada.

Nice back story on Fenerty!

Also, Barry Word was one hell of a fullback. Word and Christian Okoye was a damn good starting stable of RB's!
