Arctic Man is the Alaskan version of Spring Break but young and old show up as well. It's a combination skiing/snowmobile competition.

Appears he disappeared into a moulin, which is a water carved hole in a glacier. We have many in the area, and it's usually good to be roped up when hiking out on those things.

A 9-year-old Fairbanks boy was snowmachining with his father Saturday afternoon on a glacier near the Arctic Man event when he fell into a hole estimated to be 150 feet deep and was believed lost under the snow, Alaska State Troopers said Sunday.

Troopers identified the child as Sjohn Brown and said he was presumed dead.

An emergency room doctor with climbing experience was lowered into the hole, and dug for about two hours, but couldn't find him, other rescuers said.

Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, troopers were notified of a snowmachine accident in a mountainous area about five miles northwest of Arctic Man on Gulkana Glacier. The Tesoro Arctic Man Classic, including competitions with snowmachine riders towing skiers and snowboarders, takes place in The Hoodoos at Summit Lake near Paxson. The event draws a big snowmachining crowd.

The boy fell into a glacial hole commonly called a moulin. A moulin is formed when surface water flows down into a glacier, gradually eroding the ice to form a deep, vertical or near-vertical, cylindrical hole.

Troopers are waiting for final approval from the U.S. Army Black Rapids-Northern Warfare Center to attempt to locate and extract the boy from the crevasse. Peters was not certain when the extraction attempt would take place

That is terrible. I got to a lot of off roading events across the country and have only been to one in the snow. I don't have kids but I think I would be hesitant to bring kids to some of these type things. I see someone get hurt Everytime

Yeah, it's really no place for a child to be anyway. The area or the event. Glaciers are deceptive and can open up underneath you at any minute. Not really going to second guess the people though, that kid may have been expert. Never know.

Rowdy crowd there anyway, it's more of a spring break with some serious athletes than it is a regular spectator sport.

Does he snow machine?

We used to go up to Hatchers Pass. Turnagain Pass is too crowded.

I'm down in Texas right now. I just told him to stay away from any glacier until I get back to AK (if he goes out with anyone) .

I showed the kids some of these glacial hazards a few years ago when we hiked a glacier in Grand Teton, but he probably doesn't remember.

I'll have to remember to ask you about Hatcher and other stuff to do up there when I get back up to AK for good.

Was he being pulled by the snow machine like water skier?

Not really much you can do if the ice opens up under you is it?

It sounds like he was just riding a machine.

The big thing to avoid glaciated areas and stay on snow pack, especially when on a snow machine.

With the large snows blanketing that area the last couple weeks, it's possible the dad didn't know the area was glaciated if he's not familiar with the area.

Nah, doesn't sound like he was in the competition. It's pretty hardcore.

No, and I don't even go out on the glacier in the summer when the snow is melted at lower elevations. You have rivers running underneath the surface and hidden crevasses. I've done it, but wised up over the years. We have a glacier behind our main suburban area that has eaten several tourists.

I lived for a year just below the pass on the Palmer Fishhook Rd. It's am amazing place.

They have been trying to put a ski area in there for over a decade but still haven't got it done. The Little Su river runs through it, and it's just an incredible place IMO. Lots of mining ruins at the pass. The pass is just above treeline, and the road through there goes through the Talkeetna Mts to Willow, which as you know is unusual for Ak.
