Just make sure you make the trip the most productive, valuable business trip you can. Make your boss really appreciate you as a valuable employee.
Don't succumb to "Short Timer's Syndrome" so that when you give your boss your resignation letter on Monday he will think to himself, "Well, THAT'S a relief!"
You never know when you might need his reference for another new job.
Besides, he just might make you a counter offer you can't refuse.....

Friday morning, that's the standard in my industry.

quote:I understand but if you walk in and quit on Friday right after you return from a business trip with your boss it will make it appear that you worked hard at deceiving him all along.
I'm ready to get this shite over.
I'd be pissed if one of my employees did that.
By waiting until Monday you will at least look like you wanted to give it more thought and it wasn't an easy decision, blah, blah, blah.
You may not believe this but you're not the first person to ever quit the company where you work. Remember Michael Corleone's words in The Godfather: "It's not personal. It's business." Just keep it all business when you tell your boss.
Besides, you may impress your boss so much on the business trip that he will tell you on Friday that he's making you president of the company.....

Is there any reason you would not get a clearance? If there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON you would not get cleared to work for the new company, then I would at least consider being up-front about it and give the boss 2 weeks notice before the trip.
If you are concerned about the new company renegging on the offer or not honoring the offer for some reason other than a background check...then I guess you will have to burn some bridges.

You should tell him before the travel. That will give him an opportunity to bring a substitute who he wants to succeed you in the relationship with the people being visited.

And what happens if the final offer falls through as described in the OP?
