Looks like the movies did get some semi-frequent theatrical releases though in the early 80's so that makes sense because I remember Empire in the theater a lot clearer than I should have considering my age in 1980 compared to late 1982.

And HBO got Star Wars in late 82 or early 83 (depending on the source) so that must be when I got my tape.

Yep. Makes perfect sense.

But easily they were not on cable or easily accessible. The "playground black market" was finding a kid whose family had laserdisc apparently.

Link this.

My parents had beta max/vhs players and hbo when hbo was seriously just a fricking box with one channel.

ETA: And my mom was all into gadgets recording shite from HBO onto VHS tapes.

Wondered about that. I have some memories of the promotional hype for Empire, but I was only like 2 when it came it out so I must be remembering some re-release between then and Jedi.

We had a bootleg VHS of Episode IV that someone must have ripped from cable, and I watched it until it didn't work anymore. Jedi was the first one I saw in a theater.
