This is so very bad, and it goes past research errors.
The A-League is smaller, financially instable (teams folding), less attended and only has to compete against rugby and Aussie Rules.

The heads of MLS and the U.S. men's national team could learn a few things from the burgeoning pro-soccer league in Australia, as well as from long-standing soccer traditions elsewhere in the world: namely, that those star imported players need clever coaching and sophisticated players around them and a competitive local atmosphere to bring out their best performances.
So which of these does the A-League have? The last game I watched featured an aging Del Piero and Heskey, and 20 waaaaay average (and I'm being generous) players. The next best guy on the field was Archie Thompson.

Australian soccer players have rejected British footballing staples—namely hard tackling and speculative long balls—and broadened their tactics. Creativity like this attracts new fans, plus many of these stars are (or have been) regarded among the best on the planet at their position.
What the frick A-League games has this dipshit seen? That shite is like late 90s MLS. Hoof and hope, brutal tackles and finishing so bad that every goalkeeper looks like a world beater.
And don't even get me started on the "atmosphere." Their crowds look like a Chivas game on a rainy day.

seriously does anyone have any problem with how MLS has planned its growth?
Since Don Garber took over? No.
Check back with me if he tries to put a team in Florida. Again.

Yep. Check out the MSB thread about the Marlin's new stadium. Most apathetic sports fans in the country. An MLS team with 2 Honduran internationals in NOLA would outdraw a team of washed up superstars in Miami.

One of the next two MLS clubs will be Orlando City SC. They just brought in a new young Brazilian owner who is loaded with millions (he just put in $70M to be owner). They already average around 7K for their games and have a stadium plan in place with support from the city.

I'd still put money on it being a disaster.
Jags - tarp off the entire upper deck, in a league that people can't get enough of
Dolphins - see above, but marginally better
Marlins - LOL
Rays - LOL (unless the Yankees or Sox are in town)
Magic - LOL
Heat - How do you not sell out every game with the best NBA player of this generation (maybe ever) and a winning team?
The Lightning draw a little better than the Panthers (I think), but I imagine hockey's popularity is driven by snowbirds.
At let's not forget that the only two contracted franchises in MLS history were in Florida.
Florida is an exceptionally shitty sports market, but leagues insist on being there, because there are a lot of (old) people there who have money. The native/non-native ratio is all screwed up in Florida, and there isn't the attachment to the local team that there is in other places.

Florida is a terrible pro sports market. The primary reason MLS wants clubs there, according to Garber, is because it is a very attractive place to foreign talent. A lot of good players have expressed that they would play in MLS if they could live in Miami or Tampa/St. Pete.
Now if they could only get the support.

So why not a team in Hawaii then?
Posted on 4/11/13 at 2:54 pm to 1fairbank
Probably distance and a lack of people.
Thousands of miles from the mainland and only 1M people in Hawaii. 20M people in Florida.
I would probably volunteer my services for an expansion club in Hawaii though.

I'd fight people to be their beat writer. Heck, I'd love to have a job covering University of Hawaii sports.

My buddy who lives in Tampa claims this is more of a problem of where the stadium is relative to the heart of the population. Said it would be like the Saints playing in Covington as far as driving time goes from downtown NOLA.
I will say Tampa (Bucs, Rays, Lightning) appears to have the most sustainable sports market in the state. The rest of the state I agree with you on. It is absolute shite. Miami being the worst.

Yeah, the Rays problem has more to do with location in st Pete's. their eventual new stadium in Tampa should draw well enough.
