Ok I am proficient around engines but this one has me stumped. My lawnmower has a B&S Quantum 6hp engine. It's been acting up so I removed the carb, cleaned it, bought a new needle and seat. Reinstalled. I've checked everything I can and there is only one issue with it. It has a cracked intake manifold (little intake pipe). I repaired that. My mower will run about 15 minutes, then stop and it's smoking like it's running ridiculously hot for some reason. Help

Does it have oil?

And do you wave at other B&S engine owners?

There should be some kind of fan or something on the crank to pull air over the engine. That might be missing.

Laser thermometer is pretty helpful for this kinda shite.

No. But I am going to change the oil this evening just to make sure I have totally fresh oil. It's just running ridiculously hot and I can't figure out why.

It should still have some kind of fan deal on top the engine to pull air over it.

Rats also love to eat the blades off of them.

There could also be something restricting airflow over the engine.

If it's running hot all you can do is get more airflow.

Had a similar problem last year, replaced the carb, worked fine after that.
Talked to a guy that does small engine repair, he said the B&S carbs just dont hold up well after a couple years, no way to fix them, just replace.

Had a boat motor do that with a cracked head. Would run great until it warmed up and expanded and lost compression. Let it cool off and go again for a few.

I can't take your engine man. That's too much.

That intake may not be as "fixed" as you think. This can cause the engine to run really lean (and hot). It can also lead to a nice moon crater in the top of your piston. Pull that plug and look for signs of lean running conditions.

A fellow OB'er hooked a brotha up with an outboard,I'm just paying it forward. I have no projects I am using it for right now.Just gotta make sure the shafts are the same length.Either way,you could take the parts you need off my running motor and put them on yours.

I agree . I think you still have intake issues and you are running too lean or too rich .

Very generous. Let me try to replace the intake tube and if that doesn't help, I'll be in touch.
