Not for a profession but as a hobby or has built one before? Im in the process of piecing back together a Squier Strat and Ive been looking a few sites and I'm thinking about just building a whole new guitar.

This is my dream guitar and from doing a bit of research it wouldnt be hard to do.

Does anybody know of some good sites that I could buy hardware and everything? I found Guitar Fetish and they have alot of good quality parts that are just a lot cheaper than what you find in stores. I figure I could throw a decent set of Alnico pickups in it and I would be good to go. Maybe somewhere down the road when I get a good tube amp I could throw an active preamp in place of the volume pot.

Try Bill Lawrence pickups, make sure you get the real ones, you will not be disappointed. As far as building one, by a soldering iron and get real good at it. You can also find lots of wiring diagrams on the interwebs, I can't remember the site but just google search. The rest is just buying the parts you want, and the sky is the limit.

You could be like Brian may and carve a guitar from an old tree trunk or some shite

Ive already started rewiring the pickguard. Only to realize that the 250K pots in was intending to put in are too big for the holes so I have to wait until I can grab a new pickguard.

I did look over quite a few diagrams on Seymour Duncans website and I think I am going to go with the standard wiring setup but I am going to run a jumper wire from the middle tone pot to the empty position on the switch so I can have tone control over the middle pickup. I love the punch that a humbucker has for overdriven sound but when it comes to clean or slighty dirty tone I love single coils. Ive thought about throwing in a hot rails pickup at the bridge and coil tap it so I can have both sounds.

Did you buy a guitar and are just putting all new hardware in/on it, or are you actually getting a separate neck and body?

Im putting a Squier Strat back together and getting it playable but I'm talking about building my dream guitar (above) from a separate neck and body. I was worried about trying to copy that vintage white color but Ive found bodies online that are already painted so I'm pretty pumped about that.

My buddy went to school in Canada for a few years to learn how to make instruments.

Making them isnt too hard but every little detail effects the sound its very hard to get them right.

Ive been learning about all the little things that affect the sound and its kind of eye popping. Having the neck plate on too tight can affect sound, the nut, diecast vs stainless and brass bridges, etc.

Ive got a Les Paul and a Dean Dixie Rebel. Thunderbird bass.

Fenders are easy to mess with. I generally dont like anything other than a set neck. But they can be tough guitars..I wouldnt waste time with a Squier Strat though. Squier isnt so great..

If i was going with Fender, Id want a mid 1980's Japanese model.

Im just going to get this Squier playable so I'll have something to play while I'm building up the parts for the Fender I want to build. I plan on just keeping an eye out for parts and such as they show up because you can get some killer deals on bodies, necks, hardware if you show some patience.

eta: I recommend picking out everything you want and then taking it to be assembled professionally. I picked out everything - wood, paint, hardware; only paid about $80 to have it put together by someone who knows what they're doing.

You should find whatever you need on ebay (and usually at prices you can't match anywhere else).

I've built several electrics (Strats) and they compare pretty favorably to my Custom Shop strats.

I've also dabbled a little with acoustics.

As you can see, I kinda like fooling with the things!

If that's the case, I'd just go Van Halen on the squire and put in a single pickup with no tone or volume pots, no sense in throwing much money into that thing. Then go hog wild on the Fender Strat.

EVH had a tone control but I know what youre saying. I would think about doing that if I ever seriously used the bridge pickup. Middle or neck and I'm good.
