Anne Hathaway - I Dreamed a Dream

What the hell was that? I didn't see the movie so this is just coming to me.

It's from Les Miserables, one of the best musicals of all time.

I am a big Les Mis fan. Saw it last year in London's West End and it was magical. Naturally, I saw the movie when it came out. If you think Hathaway's version is bad (which I am not arguing) don't listen to anything Crowe did as Javert.

Ruthie Henshall's version is the gold standard of that song. Still brings me to tears.

hey, iona! the song also makes me think of susan boyle performing on britain's got talent...lots of folks saw her and made it obviously they didn't expect much...then she started to sing, and you could almost feel the change in the audience.

pw!

Yes, I remember my then SO showing me the Susan Boyle version on a youtube video years ago. When I saw Susan Boyle walk out I thought, "damn, this will be a disaster" and when I heard what she was going to sing, I thought, "she's going to ruin one of my favorite songs". When she sang it, I was in tears -- a combination of the song and the triumph of the underdog who was singing it.

I remember being moved by the song when I saw the play at the Kennedy Center in 1988. I do not think that there is a song that elicits the feeling of hopelessness as "I Dreamed a Dream". The closest I can come is Sinead O'Conner's, "Nothing Compares To You".

It is what makes music so beautiful.

yeah, you're right...most songs that i really like do have a good bit of emotion, good or bad, associated with them in my mind.

Yep. I think that of all my senses, hearing is the one that is most acute. A song can bring back so many memories and stir emotions related to people, places, events, etc. Both good and not so good.

And it's strange how songs just pop into my head. I was thinking the other day, while I was walking down the corridor of the courthouse, how a few months prior I was walking the same corridor and all of a sudden "Mr Dieingly Sad" by The Critters came into my brain. I hadn't heard the song in years and bam, there it was. I listened to it in my head for a while and then thought, "Where in the hell did that come from?"

She did butcher that song but I was kind of impressed with her voice over all in Les Mis.
