Of course I've heard the classic singles here and there... but, Christ, was there a band more ahead of its time?

Maybe, maybe not. But you damn sure know that bands like Interpol and a lot of others listened to a ton of Joy Division.

I have listened to Joy Division once and they sounded basically just like the Smiths except for a slightly different sounding lead singer.
Thats not to say that I think that they are bad. That was just my impression upon listening to them once.

Joy Division had formed and ended (with the death of Ian Curtis) before The Smiths ever got together as a band.

Joy Division sounds nothing like The Smiths to me... unless you are generalizing Manchester, England music from the mid70s - mid 80s.. and they did tend to both have depressing lyrics...
The Smiths were adamantly against keyboards... and Joy Division, while a good band, didnt have anything close to Johnny Marr's distinctive guitar... that Rickenbacher sound heavily influenced by The Byrds...

Ah, thanks for the schooling.
Like I said, I only listened to one or two songs. I cant say that I didnt enjoy them.

Joy Division is HUGE amongst skateboarders
Yeah Right! (Love Will Tear Us Apart)
Stay Gold (Atmosphere)
those are the best two examples but they are the soundtrack to countless videos

Nice. Love Bauhaus too
Peter Murphy definitely has an Ian Curtis vibe to his vocals.
