Seasoning a Cast Iron Grill Grate??

can someone explain this process. any tips or tricks? how often should i re-season?

be prepared for lots of noob questions as my Char-Griller Acorn just arrived

Ha, you got me curious about this thing the other day. I went to Lowes this afternoon to see if they had it on display, but the guy working said they were going so quick they couldn't even keep a floor model in stock.

I'd imagine you can lightly coat with canola oil and cook it in the grill or oven?

wash with soap and water. Rub down with crisco. Start a fire in your cooker and let it get as hot as you can. Put the grates in and let them cook for an hour or so. Done.

Start a fire. You should have to season(break in)the grill anyway. Burn off any residue on the new grate. Let cool, rub down with oil or vegetable shortening and bring up to about 300* for about half an hour. Let cool and your ready to go.
You should reseason after doing a really high heat cook where the existing seasoning burns off.

BTW, best to use lump charcoal in those things.
No lighter fluid. Use a Mapp/propane torch, electric starter or lighter cubes.
