Pretty fricked up that bvb will get literally nothing for losing a top 10 striker

I disagree entirely and Napoli is probably the club I watch the most of outside of the Prem. I have also watched nearly every Uruguay match because of Suarez.

Lewandowski > Cavani in terms of "deal" and overall play imo.

Seems we just disagree but it surprises me a bit if you watched Napoli that much. Cavani has scored some of the more impressive goals I've seen in the past couple of years at Napoli in addition to being a nightmare for defenders in his ability to get the Dzeko for Man City-type poacher goals.

Not that video highlights prove anything at all but just to give a sample of the kind of goals I guess I'm always thinking about with Cavani, here's some that came up on google from the season before last:

I just can´t understand how Thiago Silva would contemplate a pay cut to play for Barça. Da frick?

I'm not surprised at all by his comments. He's actually the fourth PSG player I've heard publicly say/hint something like this the past few months.

Pastore, Ibra and Lavezzi have all made somewhat similar comments to the press where their preference to return to Serie A even if wages wouldn't be near PSG levels seemed pretty clear.

Silva -- who really seems like a good guy and always comes across as a lot more humble than most -- repeated numerous times in interviews last season how much he missed AC Milan and would love to return to the point of it seeming a bit uncomfortable.

Not sure that it's a huge knock on PSG as some of it is probably simply that Ancelotti and Leonardo were the key figures convincing these guys to sign on and now Carlo is gone and Leonardo is suspended for over a year if he stays.

Also, I'm sure that the glitter of those huge checks tended to wear off once enough of them were cashed and some players started missing higher profile matches.

I posted this a few weeks ago and still stand by it for the most part:

quote:

I'd say his value is ~£25m. He's a good player, but I don't consider him world class. His best attribute is either his athleticism or his ability to find the net on late runs. He isn't great on the ball, his first touch has always disappointed me and he isn't too technical. He is strong though.

Regardless, he scores goals. But rarely are they pretty. He's a fantastic poacher at times though, an important trait.

All goals from the 12/13 Serie A season

Now that I think about it a bit more I would probably put his value in between £30 and £35m.

He undoubtedly has scored some beautiful goals, but there are also a ton of scrappy ones to go along with the 5 or 6 PKs he scored in league play last season (in the video).

I don't disagree with the £30 and £35m valuation at all. The point of the massive buyout was to show Napoli fans/owner gratitude and it was clearly set so that a PSG, Chelsea or whoever would have to overpay Napoli to get him.

One thing I would note about the difference in the videos for 2012-13 you posted and the ones I found from the season before was that most teams in Serie A seemed to figure out that for how explosive Napoli was in winning possession and quick strike counters (with Mazzarri's insistence on athletic ball winning mids) they had a ton of trouble breaking down a dense defense. Roma under Zeman may be the only the team who still came out guns a blazin' and Cavani shot us up like the Waco Kid.

That Cavani adjusted from scoring 20 yard scorchers off the volley on a full sprint to muscling around in the box and still putting up almost equal numbers can be seen as a credit to his versatility.

Hamsik, who may be one of the most underrated and entertaining players in all football, is really the one who tended to not adjust as well to breaking down numbers behind the ball.

Yea, makes perfect sense really. I firmly believe a player is worth what a club is willing to pay for him. Clearly he is worth the 50m mark to a couple clubs. I'm looking at his value in terms of how good I believe he is compared to recent strikers who have made big money moves (RvP, Dzeko, Aguero, Suarez, Balotelli).

Sunderland have apparently offered 10 million for Emmanuele Giaccherini.

Yea, he didn't play much for Juventus last season if I remember correctly. He'll be in the midfield for sure though.

personally, I love Chelsea continuing to whiff on striker targets

I love it too.

Lukaku is good enough to start for Chelsea and he can only get better, better than he already is. We don’t need to spend an exorbitant amount of money for a player that will only be a slight upgrade over what we already have.

They are the ones refusing to sell him this year...

They must believe that finishing at the top and competing/qualifying for Champions is more important/a better financial decision even with him leaving on a free.

I find that hard to believe, but it is a management decision. Would his price tag right now be around 30m euros?

Wait, are you talking about Cavani? He is much, much better than Lukaku at this point in his career.

Lukaku may have done well last season, but let's not get carried away. The kid is 20 and will have immense pressure put on him. He will be a star in due time, but I highly doubt that time has come.

Well lewa causes a problem there, his refusal to go anywhere but bayern drastically reduces the bargaining power of bvb to sell him to anyone, including bayern

Well they are a financially stable club with record profits, a massive stadium, huge support and a fantastic squad and manager. One could easily say they would rather please their fans than cash in for money they don't really need.

Yep. He wants to maximize his profile in Germany, which means Bayern is the only place he wants to go. With BVB knowing he's gone, they can spend a year scouting quality replacements who will be fairly cheap.
