i'm thinking of buying a boat but it has a force on it. i've never heard anything good about these. the price is pretty cheap for the entire unit but, i'm a little worried about the motor. it's a 97 and the reed valve has just been changed. thoughts?

I've never heard of them but I can tell you one thing. It sounds like you know better but are trying to talk yourself into buying it even though your conscious is telling you the best thing is to walk.
I'll never risk the happiness of a big purchase being tarnised by mechanical break downs. Sure you can get unlucky and get lemons with anything but in this case it seems like you have enough info to raise red flags.
Just my .02. Free advice is worth what it costs.

They are junk. Run away.

I have a 70 Force on my 96 Tracker. It sucks, but in its defense, I put it through hell. It ran well until I burned it up.
Chrysler Outboard was bought by Merc and created Force outboards for a couple years until they canned them.

My dad bought his boat brand new in 97 and it had a force on it. He fishes A LOT and there's no tellin how many hours he put on it, and he never really had any trouble with it until last year. It threw a rod while we were runnin in to our camp. He had it rebuilt and I bought it from him and he got a new boat. I've had no complaints on it so far.

Force is essentially an old Chrysler.
they are not bad engines if maintained.

My dad has a 120 force and hasn't had a minutes problem. I think it's a 97. They are made by merc so they can't be THAT bad.

Had a ski boat with a force on it. Never had any problems with it

The joke with force outboards is that they got their name because they are built by taking some off spec merc parts and forcing them together.
It definitely would not be my choice, but I wouldn't rule out a used boat just because it has a force hanging on the back.

I didn't know forces came with a cowling.
