In bronze matches I've watched, it seems that it's all about not getting deaths, especially late game. I saw a graphic describing death timers and the impact on lost XP and gold. Once put into perspective, it was staggering the impact it had on putting you behind.
To summarize, a death is not worth a kill in most instances. A shutdown of a fed carry or securing an objective does have a bonus value over killing a low value target, but rarely is it "worth".
