So for Christmas I was given $315 (weird total, I know) worth of Amazon gift cards. Wasn't really expecting that. Figure I'll upgrade my graphics card since it's long overdue. I'd like to step up to 1440 if possible. I was looking at a 970, but might go 980 if a compelling argument is made. What's the realistic difference in performance? Or perhaps I should wait a few months until some new things emerge on the market? What says the board? Also looking to go green this time, last few cards were AMD and I feel like it's time for a change.

I have a couple of 980's myself, but even I'll admit that the $200+ premium is not justifiable beyond "I wanted the best one."
On average, the 980 will give you about 12-15% more FPS in games, for close to 60% more money.
So, that's the reality if you're looking for bang for buck in Team Green at the moment and don't want to spend too much more than your gift card allotment. I consider AMD's R9-290 a solid 1440P card as it is, and the GTX 970 is even better.
