I love how our fanbase predicts 2-4 losses every season, then when we go 10-2 they lose their shite and wanna fire the coach.
I don't believe that's as inconsistent as you are implying. A fan may predict LSU to lose three games due to a tough schedule and still be entitled to a bit of outrage if those three loses are due to coaching blunders.
The prediction doesn't nullify criticisms if warranted.

A true freshman starts opposite Mills.

it boils down to: its not always about the W/L record. It's more about who you lose to, & in what manner.

Exactly right

just beat Bama and who cares
Posted on 3/29/13 at 2:12 pm to Tigah32
10-2. Beat Bama, lose two we shouldn't.
Mett throws for 2,900 yds, 25 TD's and 10 ints
Loston all SEC, has 7 int's.

quote:That sort of begs the point, which is whether the criticism is warranted. If we're expected to got 10-2, and we do, then the criticism is just as warranted from the moment of the prediction as it is after the fact. But people want to artificially compartmentalize the job of head coach so they can heap scorn on Coach Miles for whatever mistakes he makes without acknowledging the credit he deserves for his excellence.
The prediction doesn't nullify criticisms if warranted.
Perfect example is the talent vs. coaching bs. People act like the fact he has superior talent somehow negates the quality of his coaching. This position is utter bullshite pretending that recruiting and talent development are not part of coaching. Assuming equal program statures, if Coach A recruits 14-0 talent and goes 12-2, and Coach B recruits 8-4 talent and goes 12-2, then they have both done just as good a job coaching. Period.
P.S. -- I'm betting on at least three replies that posit a Boise State, or some other mid-major, compared to an LSU, Texas, etc., by someone too careless to note the "assuming equal program statures" part.

Agreed, but that's always the debate with criticism.

I'm not certain that's valid at all.

Let's say LSU is 10-0 going into the last two games, and totally gets blown out in the final two vs inferior talent.
Much different situation than losing to Bama and UF.

quote:Okay, I'm looking at it like this: how do we get to the 10-2 with unanticipated blunders warranting "x" degree of criticism, but without also experiencing unanticipated positive performance warranting an equal degree of praise?
I'm not certain that's valid at all.
Simple example: If we're predicted to lose to Florida because we're worse than them, but then outplay them and lose because we blow a late opportunity through a coaching blunder, then we must somehow have exceeded the expectation that we would be worse than them in the first place such that our loss was due to coaching blunder rather than being worse than them.

quote:Yes, but if the expectation was that we would lose to Bama and UF and win the last two games, then the criticism for blowing the two games we were expected to win would be (by unbiased observers) offset by the praise earned by beating Bama and UF when we were expected to lose to them.

Post season criticism or praise will be highly contingent on how LSU finishes the season. You can bet the mood will be much different dropping the final two as opposed to winning them.

How many times have fans lamented over a well played game that's squandered by a bad decision at crunch time? If we're fair we can express both criticism and praise when applicable.
Point of fact, expecting two loses doesn't mean accepting those loses due to a blunder.
Posted on 3/29/13 at 2:50 pm to RogerTheShrubber
quote:Yeah, that's kind of the point. That the criticism will be more based on emotion than rationality.
You can bet the mood will be much different dropping the final two as opposed to winning them.
Of course, what's the point of being a fan if you're going to be rational? Kind of defeats the purpose. I'm just mystified by people who choose to be irrationally negative. Apparently they enjoy it.
Posted on 3/29/13 at 2:54 pm to Jay Quest
quote:That's true. But a rational observer should be just as disappointed by the expectation of two losses as the result of two losses. If the expectation is that we lose two games by blunders and we do, then the disappointed is obviously the same. If the expectation is that we lose two games by quality (or lack thereof), and it takes blunders to lose two games, then our quality exceeded expectations to a degree equal to that by which the blunders disappointed (or should have).
Point of fact, expecting two loses doesn't mean accepting those loses due to a blunder.
Again, this only applies to a hypothetical rational observer. Fans are rational; that's the whole point of being a fan. The mystery to me is why so many LSU fans insist on being irrationally negative.

I agree. I only hope I never become so jaded that I expect blunders to occur.

You mean the clueless clowns don't trust Miles.
Anyone not trusting a coach leading the SEC in wins since 2005, is one dumb fricking bunny.
