basketball tournament and bowl games.
This is pretty much the reason why LSU turned down CIT or CBI, because it's more of a pay for play.

A source close to the George Mason athletic department told ESPN.com that the school lost hundreds of thousands of dollars that were not reimbursed during its 2006 run to the Final Four. One of the culprits: The school still had to pay for hotel rooms even though it played its Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games in Washington D.C., just 20 miles from the school. However, it was a good trade off as George Mason professor concluded that the team's performance in the tournament that year was worth more than $677 million in free publicity to the school.

They really don't.
1)They aren't counting money that is given to the conference and the reallocated to the conference members, ex. LSU & the Peach Bowl.
2) The NCAA pays for 75 members to travel with the team, the school is chosing to bring coaches' families and other boosters on the school's dime.
3) Don't bitch about barely breaking even if you are hosting parties for your alumni in every city.

this is the point. these mofos are just bitching because they must be low on cash reserves. they will make money off this run even if they lose a few thousand on expenses they are getting millions worth of exposure

Knowing what I know about George Mason's Econ department, you can take that number as fact. Those guy know their shite over there.

Yep. Also from the OP link.

FGCU will eventually see some nice return from merchandise royalties. Through Tuesday, the school said it had sold $148,904 worth of Eagles gear in March compared to a little more than $20,107 during the same period of time last year.

The CBI and CIT are jokes of a tournament that aren't run by the NCAA, so they have nothing to do with it

all that ^^^
plus being featured on TV for several hours during the run up and actual game are well worth any "losses" considering it would cost far more to advertise your school with traditional commercials.
so instead of a school crying that they "lost" $100k on a game (which is likely just bullshite maneuvering for taxes and such) it should be viewed as they spent $100k on a 3 hour commercial for their school.
