Bradley needs to play a box-to-box role. He is too good in the attack to have him sit back as a DLP.

I think he is the biggest beneficiary of Coach Klinsmann. I think Bradley executed the coaches gameplan as well as could be expected in Azteca.

My only question is, why all the 2nd half Offensive subs if we are going to play essentially a shell defense?

It's boring to watch and it looks like shite for the most part but a little short, short, long is valuable if you're trying to keep a solid defensive shape and pick your moments on when to attack.

this

what bothered me last night was the lack of movement to open space by players who had just passed the ball. A prime example would be at the end of the game when whoever was playing left wing received the ball near the left sideline on mexico's side of the field; he then passes backwards to beasley who then passes back to the left wing. From there beasley should have moved towards the goal and then he would have been open to receive pass splitting two defenders. instead beasley stands still leaving the defender between him and the left wing, and the left wing has no where to go with ball and must force a bad pass. There was a lot of this going on last night and its something that shouldnt be a problem.

Good thing is that our defense looked really good even with beasley struggling at left back. He did make a few great plays from that position though

Explain.

Brek Shea and Eddie Johnson aren't going to wow you with their attacking prowess against Mexico, but they are direct and mobile enough to punish a team like Mexico in Azteca if Mexico gets sloppy.

Our inability to move the ball with any pace up the pitch was the reason we had zero goal-scoring chances from open play

We had no pace on the wings until EJ came on and we had no one other than the forwards to receive the ball from Bradley in the middle.
I'm not complaining about last night, but we need someone that can take the ball from the d mids and bring it forward. Dempsey is not that guy IMO.

The player that I want him to become is Michael Ballack. I think he's best in the box-to-box mold. He's in outstanding shape, is a good tackler, good passer, good in the air, isn't afraid to put one on goal. I just wish we could unleash him.

we need that other central mid to emerge to do this

edu was shitty last night and we had a lot of trouble linking the midfield forward last night for long stretches

There were holes to be had in the center of the pitch, but we only even attempted to exploit them once.

Exactly. I really feel like we could have scored early in the second half. Mexico were pressing high and were extremely vulnerable.

More towards the end I can understand not attacking, despite Klinsmann's lolwut subs. Our starters were exhausted.

but Edu filled in serviceably

let's be honest here, Edu did a nice job defensively, but he still gives the ball away at an extremely high rate.

No. JK is holding him back if anything. He is absolutely clueless.

eh, I think Bradley could be amazing if they let him move forward some more and honestly he's not the best PURE defensive midfielder we have. Not to mention he's clearly been told (at least for last night) to take the safe pass. Allow him some freedom moving forward and you'd see some amazing passes, no doubt.

You must have missed the entire first page.

Do you understand how futile it is to have a volume passer in a counter-attacking side?

It really is brilliant that JK can tell Bradley to complete a 3-yard sideways pass 30 yards into his own half knowing that the players around him will just immediately clear the ball.

Michael Bradley played in an Arteta role last night, which is a waste of the talent he has. It would be an entirely different story if the US had midfielders/defenders around him who could receive a pass in their own half and string together a decent bit of possession. Then he would be priceless.
