Mid may I believe. I am debating planting milo in with the sun flowers this year.

Yeah, the other guys want to plant sunflowers. I was thinking about planting both. Opinions and past experiences are appreciated. This is my first rodeo.

We are doing milo, sunflowers, and corn.

Have done milo n brown top millet past 5 years, half field of milo half of millet.
The millet is cant miss, very drought tolerant and doves prefer it to milo, especially if field is burned.
We plant 3rd wknd in april every year

Infidel, I would plant sunflowers. I've planted it all. Nothing tops sunflowers for doves imo. Millet is good. Milo is fine and so is corn. A good clean sunflower field will it trump all. IF you go milo I would plant here in a couple weeks. Sunflowers you can wait till first of May.

We cant plant sunflowers in st francisville, too many damn deer. They let em get about 8" and mow them down, thats why we stick with milo n millett. Will be planting corn this year, not in dove field but in food plots for deer.
Our dove field is well established though

Balls, guys want to do corn strips and leave it standing for deer. I was going to plant field in millet and come back with strips of corn and sunflower. Your thoughts?

Yea, deer will frick em up. I can't plant behind my house with a planter because of the deer. They go right down the row and eat every seedling. I have to broadcast and put so many seeds out there they can't eat them all

That should work. The standing corn would give you something to hide in and you can clip the rest.

I'm going drive a tractor for a guy who's planting some tomorrow. It's a crop, not for doves, necessarily.

Thanks. Looks like sunflowers is what we'll do. Now I just have to talk them into planting on a little larger scale then they were planning. Have about a 40 acre field, how many acres do we need to really attract birds? I know that is kind of a loaded question.

Ours is about 5 acres and we do fine

You dont really need a big plot. If you have a 40 acre field then maybe a few 2 or 3 acre plots around it would work well.
I personally havent seen as good of results for sunflowers as I have for others listed suck as milo, millet, and sorghum.
