Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest '70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late '60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez

I heard the story about this guy on World Cafe. It seemed very intriguing and I want to see this doc.

It's an absolutely incredible story. He was bigger than the Beatles/Elvis in South Africa and had no idea.
He was also on 60 minutes. Extremely humble guy and worked construction his entire life.

Hands down the best documentary I've ever seen. Loved it.

I hope his family will be well taken care of after the documentary.

I've been spreading the word on this doc for about 6 months now. Everyone I tell about it, I suggest to them to not read anything about it or watch reviews/trailers.

I watched the 60 mins special before seeing it and it didn't ruin anything.
I'm trying to get the word out, too. It's such a special story.

Some real praise in here. I might have to check this one out even though it didn't look that special.
But again I thought Exit Through the Gift Shop would be a boring doc on art and I ended up really liking it.

You got to love that vinyl sound for old songs

Actually started watching this one right after you started this thread. Was bored
Not bad. It was definitely interesting. That old 70s Jim Croce style of music tears my nerves up. Not that that's what the film is about, but obviously they played it the entire time
An endearing story though

Awesome stuff. I just hope he and his family will be well taken care of after being ripped off by a bunch of POS'.

Is it available for instant streaming on Netflix? This seems like something I'd love.
