I'd say Matty Ott with 33 saves. What say you?

That's not really fair.

I think people vastly overrated his abilities as a freshman because he got put in a sweet role with a lot of easy situations. He was anything but dominant that year, but rather, most of the time had just enough weird delivery and speed to get by on novelty. That and only pitching 1 inning at a time when you're usually up by 2 or 3 runs doesn't hurt.

In truth, he never had awesome stuff to begin with. Even when he was rolling as a freshmen, other hitters were making good contact and just missing big hits off him.

I'm still shell-shocked from Ott blowing the lead when Florida was in-town and ranked #1. Matt Flynn, Patrick Peterson, ESPN, everyone was there and we had the lead the whole game. Till Matty came in. It changes the course of our season and Matty was never the same after getting rocked and blowing the big win.

Will say I really Chris Cotton, not fancy, not lock-down, just good.

Maybe his freshman year. After that he really struggled.

I say the save stat is overrated, as is the closer moniker. But I digress.

His mustache will kill you for that.

ETA: But still one of my favorite baseball moments.

It was certainly a classic baseball duel of one great moustache versus another great moustache for that one great October night.

X 1000. The designated closer role is beyond stupid.

It makes sense to some degree, but just not the way managers do it with their rigidly inflexible braindead routines, taking out pitchers who are on their game just because some bullshite handed down wisdom that never made any sense to begin with.

It's like they have to do it to make the closer happy, because the closer has saves as an important part of his contract, because some random person made up a somewhat arbitrary save statistics back before anybody was even alive.

It's one of the first things I ever got into an ugly fight about on the Rant, back many moons ago, with the controversial Lester Earl.

Not a "closer" but if I had to have one LSU pitcher put a game away it would be Louis Coleman.

Eades was dealing against UF in 2011 and Coach brought in Ott. I said at the time (before Ott blew the save) that Eades should have stayed in. Lester was one of many people after the game who defended the move. Ott had not been sharp in several outings before that weekend.
