On the sitcom," Community" there was an episode where they ridded themselves of their mascot for P.C. reasons as called themselves the," humans". The mascot was clothe from head to toe in one of these skin colored mesh looking sock suits.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish? Ragin Cajuns?

Irish and Cajun aren't derogatory. Redskins is analogous to, say, the Washington Coloreds. Or maybe the Washington N*****s.

Like it or not, Redskin is a racist word. Regardless of whether we've all been desensitized to it.

Anybody who is offended by the name "Redskins" really needs to reevaluate their life and their delicate sensibilities.

Yes, and I'm sure that's how whites felt about their denigrating racial nicknames for blacks during the Civil Rights era. They weren't "trying to offend" blacks; the blacks just had delicate sensibilities. . .

It is a truly fricking terrible name

It is an ethnic epithet, for God's sake

I don't think the government should have any say in the matter. . .but they should change their name.

how I feel...I don't feel it is particularly offensive but its a pretty poorly worded name. With that fanbase in that market, they could make a mint off of a rebrand.

I'd buy it.

But seriously, this is why we have HUGE problems right now in our country. Congress wasting time, paper, and worry over something that has already been decided by the GD courts. It's like they don't understand that there are 3 branches for a reason...

It doesn't help the Redskins that the man who chose that name was, in fact, a big blatant racist.

Why would that even be relevant to a discussion of this issue?

Does his opinion of Blacks have anything to do with Native Americans it is not like they were Mardi Gras indians? If he disdained them why did he choose the name? Why didn't he go with the Washington Colored People if the name has as you seem to suggest something to do with disdain?

Believe it or not when I see the term Redskin the last thing I think is skin color. I think NFL football team then very rarely American Indian. But you throw out the word racist here. When the term Redskin is used do you think the people that use that term think their race is superior to the American Indian because of their skin color. Because that's what racist means.

In other words, like most Americans, you've been desensitized to it.

But I was never sensitized to it. I never thought of it as a racist term. The sensitizing is taking place now.

If it were a racist term why would a football team call themselves something that is inferior? That makes no sense. Football teams name themselves after noble, fearful, strong, etc. things.

That does seem inexplicable. We disdain you so much we want to label ourselves with what we abhor.

Wouldn't it be nice if that happened to more words?

I'd LOVE to take the power out of neeger.

I recognize it is not. But, I damn sure wish it was. I think the ultimate thumb in the eye to REAL racists is to take that word and make it worthless to them

It is only valuable to those that need to make it unspeakable to create guilt.

I can't imagine wanting there to be a word that could apply to me as a person that can't be spoken because it is so terrible. How can such a workd exist for any people?

The name of god cannot be mentioned in some cultures out of respect, but a word so terrible about a people that it can not be mentioned is bizarre.

Another example of liberal tolerance for freedom of speech.

It would be one thing if this was a private group pressuring the Redskins to change its name, but it's the friggin' government doing it.

TRUTH. I was told/scolded to get away from the "Colored" man as a child of the early 60's. I looked at him and at me and I declared we were both "colored" He was black and I was white. I was given the biggest hug by that man twenty years later.
