re: Theater of the Bizzare - Real Parasites ("takers") are those in Private Sector

I don't agree with everything put forth in the article...however, wouldn't you agree that unions can stifle competition and strangle industry through "rents".....do copyright laws sometimes serve to strangle innovation through "rents"....can government kill industry through "rents"...I think you would or should answer yes to all 3....you should rightfully disagree with his points about pvt individuals that make money through "rents"...sure in some instances they aren't creators or industrialists as defined by the writer, but they're just part of commerce.

And as for the part you highlight...he states plainly that higher taxes can strangle an economy, something I think we all agree upon...he just has a different definition of high then me and you.

Indeed it did...but it wasn't just about the pvt sector or landlords renting apartments to people.

so you against intellectual property now?

Doesn;t the article also advocate that those who create should be compensated for their work?

How do you reconcile those 2 points?
quote:Did you even read the full article? This is why you can't be taken seriously.

I did. And those who own property or collect rent, fees for a service, or fees for use of a good are not a drain on society. In fact, they actually contribute to the economy. To claim that they are a "drain" is insane. Regardless of what drivel you wish to believe....
There ya go...the beginning of the Cyprian mindset move to confiscate personal savings. All disregarding the fact that those who do indeed own rental property...PAID FOR IT in a free-market, goods and services economy. More demonization of the haves.

A long time ago, when I stayed stoned and ridiculed the greedy 'man' in their monkey suits, I really believed this line. Until...I lived for a while and interacted with BOTH the haves and the have nots. Guess what. A lot of have nots...have not...because they SUCK! It's mostly the successful folk that you can trust to be fair and honest. Though there are exploitative Capitialist rogues; even they continue to amaze me, in that (assuming they exist) they haven't pulled the plug on the Socialist Obama. That I AM surprised by.

That said...there is a ton of money laying around, that would and could be invested for a mostly altruistic and minimal gain...IF the investors RESPECTED those whom they are expected to invest in. That's a big part of the problem. Slackers...period. I know...my family has it's share.

No copyright laws prevent others form making your idea but cheaper. Patents are essential in the phamaeudical industry.

The reason teh generic stuff is so much cheaper is because the companies that make it didn't have to come up with the compounds, and or test the drug. For ever safe effective drug out there there are a ton that were studied that didn't work or weren't safe. That research takes money, and those expenses are recuped by charging more for drgs that do work. YOu can't do that if there is no patent system. Who woudl do that?

Which is total bull shite. As a landlord you CANNOT remain passive. I owned rental property in New Orleans and it kept be so busy and became such a pain in the ass, I said f this and sold my property.

Well to be completely fair, progressives don't believe in the rights, especially the right to property. So the whole idea of private property and rents is in opposition to their ideology.

Those evil people should stop renting then. Make everyone buy. If the poor can't afford to buy then they will be homeless. Who gives a shite. At least there will be less evil profiteers in the world.

F*ck Salon. No seriously. F*ck them. Those accusing rightful property owners of being "extractors" are also well know to stiff writers and photographers.

I have significant problems with our current intellectual property laws.

Yes, however, current patent laws allow incumbent companies in mature industries to stifle competition and extract "rents" for any form of encroachment. I think the more appropriate question is all intellectual property really property and is property that one can own to the exclusion of all other variations?

quote:

This proliferation of patents has had a chilling effect on would-be innovators because they’re too busy worrying about licensing and legal action from patent trolls. Imagine, for example, you manage to invent a way to move information through the fifth dimension. Perhaps you’d get a Nobel in physics. But you’d be legally evacuated of any prize winnings if you tried to commercialize the discovery: U.S. Patent 6,025,810 has already been granted to the idea. Or what about the concept of delivering stuff to customers on a regular basis while allowing for the fact that people might want to change their order once in a while? Amazon has that one: It’s patent 8,370,271. (If you are one of a dying breed of newspaper delivery boys, you probably better get ready to be sued.) Boldrin and Levine suggest that as much as 14 percent of R&D expenditures by the end of the 1990s were accounted for by patent litigation costs.

patents are not copyrights.

You listed the latter. patents need work, but copyrights are not the same thing at all.

True different forms of intellectual property, but copyright law is broken, too, and also has limited innovation primarily in the arts world.
