Long story short, I need to start exercising again and cannot run due to my knees. I would prefer to bike over swimming since I can bike anywhere and I would have to travel to a pool.

I am looking at these two bikes currently and am not sure which one I would like better.

Trek FX
or
Trek DS

All of my biking will be on paved surfaces and would be more smooth than rough. However, with the DS, I have the option of some light offroading (that sounds dumb when talking about bicycles). The FX, on the other hand, is only 25#s compared to the 35#s of the DS.

I plan on going to a local bike store to get sized and purchasing local, if they can compete with online prices.

I had a 10 speed once.

On a serious note mrs jab is a triathlete and says she'd recommend the DS.

I have a Trek 820 that I have been riding around LSU for 5 years. Then again, it's a mountain bike and not some pussy road bike.

Personally, I think riding trails is more exciting. But everyone has their preference.

Rode one at LSU. Don't even remember what kind it was. It was quicker than driving and parking was a lot easier.

My sack and chode just werent made for a bike seat. No clue how i tolerated that shite as a kid, but i started biking a few years ago and i could hardly remain seated on a road bike. I went with a mountain bike with full suspension, love it.

I like the FX because of the reduced weight and slightly better price. However, I think that I need a size 19 and the FX goes from 17.5 to 20. Not sure how big of a difference a 19 and 20 are though.

Jab, thanks. I like the DS but it seems like it does a little bit of everything, but nothing great. I honestly dont know how big of a difference 25 and 35lbs are either. Im not trying to win any races, just lose some late night pizza.

Bap, Thanks? You ride a mountain bike around campus? Guess you need to extra large forks for the Yetti stickers? I will end up with a nice MT bike but this will be later.

Your ABC* takes a beating sometimes.

My advice - buy a good seat.

That is why I am even considering the DS. It weighs 10 lbs more but its not nearly as heavy as the MT bikes that I used to ride as a kid. Havent test rode either so that may make all the difference too.

Not recommending this one specifically, but i ride a much cheaper version of something like this. That rear suspension coupled with a good seat and your junk doesnt take near as bad a beating. LINK

For what you are talking about, either one would suit your needs. However, lighter is always better. You might look into more of traditional road frame with more of a recreational feel. But you are correct, if you are going to do any light offroading, the DX would suit your needs.

Yeah shite is crazy what some of them can run. I have an el cheapo from academy. I'm wanting to upgrade cause its slowly falling apart, but not about to spend that kind of money on a bike.

Not getting a Mt bike at the moment. Want someyhing that is comfortable to ride long distances on pavement. Once I get more into it then I will spend the money on a second bike.

Canyon, how much difference is 25 and 35 lbs. Please don't say 10 lbs. I agree that lighter is better but just for casual riding and comfort, it seems like either would be fine. I know for 30 mile trips and speed the 10 pounds is a killer but I can't be too bad for just exercising.

Get The 7.2 fx disk not the 7.4 save 100 bucks that fork on dx blows. You can get more of a mountain bike with better suspension than that dx if you want to take to the trails, with a regular mtn bike you can put a slick & skinnier tire on it much faster than aggressive mtb tire. Everyone is getting into the fitness bike market check a few other brands scott specialized cannondale etc.. The closest thing to a do everything bike would be a hardtail mtb with a plush fork on it swap out the tires & go riding. I love bikes & riding but I hate cyclist

You nailed it. If you go on any appreciable distance rides, the extra weight is a killer. However, you will be more apt to ride the lighter bike more, because it will handle better and be more responsive. Even if your rides for the near future consist of just around town spins, the more you ride the more you'll want to go on longer rides. Hence, looking at the lighter rig.
Believe me, I've been riding seriously for over 30 years. Everyone that I've known to get into cycling "just for some exercise" gets hooked. You will eventually want a bike that is fun to ride, and not one that feels like your constantly riding a fat tire rig in crotch mud. I used to know a bunch of cyclists in the B.R. area and raced with the old Baton Rouge Cyclist Club. You ought to be able to check out the Treks at a local shop and get those guys to give some good advice on use and fit of the bike.

I thought about this but was not sure if I should pay the extra for the factory disc or get aftermarket. That is also the first that I have heard about the fork too.

I dont want to ride trails. I want to ride pavement and maybe once in a blue moon ride trails. Its looking like I need a bike for each, but a road bike first.

I looked at them and I am not ruling them out but their websites suck. Trek has by far the best website to look and compare. I am sure a local store will give me more info.
