There's no news on whether he's leaning towards 49ers or Saints.
My guess is he was offered around the 4-5 mil range, which is what the better CBs were getting in this market and he wants the 6-7 range. I'm thinking SF offered similar to what the Saints did/is/would and he his seeing how it shakes out. My gut tells me that if they sign Butler, they are out of the Nnamdi Bowl.

Trying to find money... if we cut Streif 2.25 mil M Jenkins 2.5 mil Tom Johnson 500K and Chamberlain 600k if numbers are close would equal 5.85 mil. cleared?

Throw in getting rid of Ivory's $2 mil, and I'm down with all of that.
(Assuming those numbers are correct, and there is no dead money in there)

My god! Aren't we gonna need an OT somewhere on the line!?

What about the swarthy guy on the left
Posted on 3/21/13 at 9:11 am to HollierThanThou
We had about 3 guys step in last year at RT at who were as good, if not better than Streif. No need to pay him over $2mil to be below average.

PFF free agency blog comment-
According to Jason La Canfora, OLB Victor Butler will visit the Saints on Thursday as he continues his search for a starting role. He recently met with the Steelers as he could be a possible replacement for OLB James Harrison. Butler has always produced in his limited opportunites with the Cowboys including a +7.2 overall grade last season. The Saints are in need of edge rushers for their pending switch to a 3-4 scheme and Butler could be a perfect fit.
Tez Wilson, Juneyah, Butler, and one of the top 4 OLBs in the draft would be a fine looking young group to compete. Not a lot of proven product resume to pencil in but so much potential I like the upside risk.
I've been banging the drum the past few seasons for 40 sacks being a threshold for virtual 1st Rd bye-lock to the playoffs. I'm not really big on the numbers but in the Saints case they are reflective of the overall weak pass rush we have lived with. Team sack totals since 2007- 32, 28, 35, 33, 33, 30. Those numbers were with the GW extreme blitzing as well. Hell, could there be anything more incriminating than that your strong safety leads your team in sacks one year? If what you're doing isn't working... do sumpin different! Complete scheme change, new DC, and some infusion of up-n-comers fits the bill.

I don't see this happening. Would be overpopulating one position at the sake of other positions of need. OLB's are often found later in draft, so I can see them using a 3rd on one.
If we get Butler (and especially if we get him and Namdi), I really think we will be going WR in first (unless a LT drops)

When not one of them has ever been a successful fulltime starter I don't think 4 too many. It's just competition and some degree of insurance. Just Juneyah & Wilson currently keeps Payton up at night. Adding one guy that has been a role player/backup won't alleviate that altogether.

not the elite pass rushing OLBs. They are in the upper echelon of draft premium.

I'm the opposite too in that I cannot hardly imagine a WR. More so just on value. Patterson or Austin are no surefire mid 1st high impact guys. They may be but it would be no shocker for them to both be passed on at #15.

I've been trying to find a place to post this thought and didn't want to start a whole new thread:
Why is everyone sleeping on Toon and Morgan? These guys are the future of the receiving corps and are young. Toon will basically be a rookie this year anyway and Morgan stepped up big time down the stretch. I don't think drafting a WR is very responsible given the few draft picks we do have.
To me they seem like tomorrow's Colston and Henderson

I been thinking the same thing. Don't think the Saints will be spending a 1st, 3rd or 4th round pick on WR.............too many greater needs
Posted on 3/21/13 at 10:45 am to jralspanky
too many LB's....refer to DOME PATROL!!! Lofton, Butler, Junyeah, Wilson, (Jarvis/Keke/Ziggy), Hawthorne, and Vilma....this sounds ridiculously awesome....
Greer, Lewis, Robinson, White would reap the benefits...not to mention I think jenkins is due for a breakout year...our back 8 is set.
we are a NT away from being done on defense. Great job Loomis

adding nnamdi would just be borderline insane...outside of predicting an injury probably too much money in the secondary to be honest...although we do need someone to lock down julio

I'd say that is definitely Plan A. How it works out is to be seen. Jimmy Graham made us want to get rid of Shockey. Brown was sposed to do the same thing for Bushrod. He might and we're prolly hoping but there's no real assurance that will happen. In the harsh world of salary capped business ya gotta see that Colston is gonna come to some crunch years...
year age/cap hit
2013 30/$4.5mil
2014 31/$8.3mil
2015 32/$9.7mil
2016 33/$10.5mil
As much as we love big smoove, Toon turning into the real deal would be huge in continued success as related to cap management. Comparitively Toon will still only be at $763K in 2015.

Toon was very solid for Wisky in 2011, one of their big playmakers. I'm really rooting for him

At reciever we have Colston, Moore, Henderson, Morgan, Toon, Arrington, and Roby. I could see us drafting someone, but I wouldn't have a problem going forward with that group.

Let's the pump the breaks. I'm just hoping if he is starting for whatever ungodly reason, he can improve from the 88th out 88th ranked safety spot. Shouldn't be too hard.
