true, but didn't my selection of K series, Z77, and aftermarket cooling indicate my intentions in that configuration? It's so easy to do a modest bump with this architecture without any increased voltage, so why not?

Possibly upgrade or switch to a different case?
Like Antec 900? shitty cases are terrible to build in
Video Cards are pretty deep discussion on their own and have a huge range. If you are really going to straight game with it on assuming 1080p I would spend the rest of the budget up to 1000 (like you originally stated) on the gpu
