In many ways the power of computers is consistently underestimated. Our computers do about as much or more as any computer from a 1960's or 70's sci-fi show set hundreds of years in the future. Think of the Enterprise computer on TOS. Yeah, it talked but it was slow and had many useless flashing lights.

Speaking of TOS, their communicators aren't as useful as our cell phones.

The Dick Tracy wrist watch videophones are probably do-able and they may even have them out there. But it never really caught on. Not practical to use I guess.
