So my backyard has been in dire need of fill for some time so yesterday I got several loads of spillway mud and sand dumped in my backyard. Entire backyard is covered with as much as 5 ins in some spots.

My question is what is the best way to get the grass to come back as quickly as possible w/o adding sod? I have St. Aug under all the dirt and it really grew exceptionally well. Will the St. Aug grass just power its way up in a few months or should I put some seed down to help things out??

5" may be a little much but yes St. A will come thru.

Also hope you didn't put a lot of new dirt on top of any well established oak trees in your yard.

No oak trees. Mix of sand and spillway mud.

It will grow through, eventually. But will take a good bit of time. Least you don't have to worry about cutting your lawn for quite some time

Was it from a garden center or somewhere else? You might have just dumped a lots of dirt filled with weed seeds...

That was my thought too.

Get some good bermuda seed and spread it. It loves sand, keep watered and fertilize. You should have full coverage by June.

I'm no expert, but you might want to spread some pre-merge like Preen to kill any weeds that might be dormant in the mud.

I can't begin to tell you what the soil makeup of the mud will be (might be as rich as 3 feet up a cow's arse for all I know), but you might consider ammending it with some fertilizer or manure to help get things started.

And check for sand fleas in the sand.
