So if we re-work the deals of Vilma and WIll, can we still cut them in June?

I have a feelings that every thing is probably hammered out one way or another, saints are keeping cards close to vest.

Don't most of these deals involve giving them cash now instead of later?

Or are we assuming they will just take a pay cut.

I don't see us paying them now only to cut them later.

they have to take huge paycuts IMO or else there would be no hold ups.

It doesn't make sense for them to cut them in June unless they are

1) Obviously lacking performance in the RR system
2) Injured to the point that it is more expensive to keep them

Even if players are designated as June1st cuts now their contracts are still on the books until June 1st so the extra money from their prorated bonus wont be seen until June, and it doesn't help any in FA. Sad to say but it's restructure or find a new job.

Depends on how it's done. If we turn their salary into a bonus to spread over a few more years we can't cut them because it would give us the same cap problem.
If we get them to sign with base salary and bonus significantly less than it was before then we can cut them.

I get tired of having to spend as much effort deciphering the capology as much as player performance. That's just the evolution of the NFL though. For those that fall by the wayside in the contractual wrangling convos get this part- this current tight cap situation is the result of rolling money forward in restructured deals. Basically, ya have to pay the piper someday. With Brees at 34, I'm not complaining about the administration putting the chips on the table. There will be some hiccup years where contributing players leave in any case. Playing in New Jersey next February will soothe all the worries and concerns.

I did not realize this is the case. Well it makes no sense to cut Harper until then because he has $6.1 mil in dead money and costs $7.1. You wouldn't cut him now to save $1 mil, though if we draft a SS that looks good I could see them cutting him after June 1st.

Edit:
Smith on the other hand would still save us about $4 mil now though right(and then $10 mil come June 1st)? Seems it'll be much tighter than expected until June 1st.

I see you also posted that in the cap thread but I glossed over it.

I was thinking about this this morning.

I'm sure they can but the negative backwash that would result would be significant. Any FA, now and in the future, considering the Saints might have second thoughts on how the team treats their players.
