The "bad guy" is just a bit too inconsistent. He lets them alone till they leave and THEN tortures the blacksmith?

Yeah that bothered me.

ans yes they wore guyliner. Vikings painted their faces when raiding to look like wolves or demons and took pretty much cocaine so they would go berzerk

I see why he did it. He's weeding out the folks he can't trust.

I think he knows there is land to the west, but for some reason he doesn't want it known. He likes being the big fish in the relatively small pond. Once Rag and his crew prove him wrong, he loses a lot of credibility and Rag gains it. He's the Earl, he can't be wrong.
